AMD Graphics stalling on 3 Macs with latest El Capitan udpate

I'm having a problem on three different systems. 2 MacPro towers and a MacBook Pro. All running the latest El Capitan with the latest updates.

Since the last update, all systems are having trouble with the AMD graphics cards causing temporary hangs and generating errors in the system log.

System 1: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDCypressGraphicsAccelerator

System 2: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDJuniperGraphicsAccelerator

System 3: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDTurksGraphicsAccelerator

When these errors are generated, the system completely pauses as if locked, then comes back until the next error.

Not sure what is causing this and a google search comes up with nothing for the "stalling for detach" message.

Appreciate any help.

Best,

Chuck

Does anyone know whether or not 10.12.2 is also affected? Thanks.

A friend of mine who used to have this problem recently upgraded to Sierra, and since then, he tells me that he hasn’t seen the problem in two weeks.

As for me, I have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro with an AMD Radeon R9 M370X running 10.11.6, and I’m seeing this problem every couple of days (and then I reboot and I get a reprieve of another two days; repeat).

I always do clean installs for major version upgrades. For this downgrade I would also recommend a clean install. Actually, the installer might refuse a downgrade, so you would be forced to do a clean install, but I don't know for sure. I have found over the years and for many OS that clean installs for major version upgrades eliminate a huge amount of small and big issues that might arise and possibly cost you more time than just installing from scratch.

Have yet another system having this problem. This one is a MacMini with the error:

kernel[0]: stalling for detach from IntelAccelerator

A full system hang happens with each hit to the log file of this "stalling for detach" message and then runs fine until the next one.

Seems to not be limited to the AMD cards, but a general graphics failure. Still no idea what triggers it. Previous three systems have a lot of apps installed, but the mini is pretty much stock O/S and XBMC.

I have reset PRAM,SMC and reboot on the other three systems. Only PRAM on the mini. Ran for a few days without recurrence, but just had it happen again on one of the towers after a bunch of WindowServer errors:

WindowServer[239]: WSBindSurface : IOAccelCreateSurface returns -536870201

WindowServer[239]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "SystemUIServer" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.

I can post more log snippets if it helps, but don't want to spam the discussion with pages of useless log info.

Best,

Chuck

I also have this problem on my three systems:

* MacBookPro (15-inch, Early 2011)

* iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

* MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013)

All running 10.11.6 (15G1212). This stared happening after the latest security update.

Not sure what to do expect to reboot when it starts happening (the computer becomes unusable). I have pretty much the same software on all of these computers and all of them are logged in with the same iCloud account.

I'm seeing the same on my Mac Pro (Early 2008) running 10.11.6.

It seems it's new with 10.11.6 for me.

12/31/16 9:08:58.000 AM kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDJuniperGraphicsAccelerator

Only thing that helps at this point is a reboot (until it comes back). Makes the machine unusable.

I suppose there's no straight forward way to force it back to an older OS release?
