Adobe Premier Pro x Macbook Pro 2016 = Red Screen?

I've been using Adobe Premiere for ages and have never had any problems with it. Of course, sometimes when rendering you feel like your computer is about to take off, but that's about it. However, I recently got a new 15 inch Macbook Pro (late 2016 model) and things are getting nasty and I'm hoping to get some advice here.

So the first time I was working in Adobe Premiere on the new machine I tried exporting a project to MP4. The first time Premiere froze. Second time, the same thing happened. The third time, the screen went all red, but mostly green.

Now I must say, this was a project I had transferred from my old Macbook, and I read some people had the same problem with working on project that were originally made on an older Apple machine. Since then I've updated to MacOS 10.12.2 and have created a NEW project in Premiere (no old files were used). I thought things would be over now (as I read they fixed this problem in the latest update?)

And while working on this new project (a review on this new Macbook, how ironic) the following happened. Screen went all red. Could only get out of it by restarting the computer. I loose part of the work I've done, it takes up time I could have spend on other project and mainly, I feel like a new 3000 euro machine shouldn't do this.

Any help here (throwing the Macbook out of my window is not an option)?

Premiere has been my editing app for 3 years. In November 2016 I bought a 15" MacBook Pro with the Radeon Pro 460 graphics card. Almost immediately I started having crashes using Premiere (playing video). Apple had me do some resets by phone - Pram and something else. It settled down for a short while, but then continued to crash, ending up crashing every time I played a clip. When the the computer crashed I got the green checker box freeze with red flashes. The computer was replaced by Apple at the end of December. Now the same crashes have started to happen on the new machine. I have contacted Apple and Adobe. Apple has made no suggestions other than to say ask Adobe. Adobe had me reinstall the app, says the app should work on the machine, but it is still crashing. The new computer has crashed 4 times during 5 hours of work. When I got the first machine in November I did a fresh install. I have little else installed on it other than the essential Creative Cloud apps and no 3rd party apps or LUTs. I did migrate to the replacement machine. I am forced to return to my 3 year old MacBook Pro which works just fine with the same OS10.12.2 and the latest version of Premiere. The new MBP is going back and it's unlikely I will buy another.

Hi Gregory, Currently theres a thread on the Adobe forum about this issue. An Adobe representative (Rameez Khan) has joined the discussion there claiming that they are "working with Apple to fix this issue". You can find the thread here:

I would encourage you to post your experience there as well to raise the pressure. Thank you !

Received my new MacBook Pro 15' with Radeon 460 a week ago. Installed nothing except for Adobe CC to keep the system as clean as possible for video editing which is my professional business. Whilst my first edit Adobe Premiere CC 2017 crashed 4 times with the graphic glitch error. Mostly suddenly whilst encoding but also whilst editing a graphic glitch happens which leaves the screen in a huge green pattern and then the Mac crashes completely. Ive turned off File Vault, turned off Automatic Graphic Switching. Both Mac OS Sierra and CC are on their latest versions (OS Sierra 12.12.2 and Premiere CC 2017 at 11.0.1 (Built 6). And yes it seems that Adobe and Apple once again are playing the blame the other party game...

Hmm, sorry to hear you are experiencing the same problem, but at least I'm glad to hear this ALSO happens on totally "clean" installs. Since I just use it for my business as well I had to transfer everything from a Time Machine backup but that doesn't seem to be the problem then.

Like I said, the first time it glitched was during rendering, right now it's just while editing. It wasn't a "weird" clip full of effects like warps or applied LUTs.. just a basic imported Mp4 file. So very random.

FYI: I have the Radeon 455

Let's hope we get an update on this!

Of course I could just return it but:

a) Every hour without the machine means I can't work, which means no income.

b) Who says a new machine won't have the same problem?

Guessing from the similarity of the stories that you may have also posted this on Adobe's support site, which is of course a reasonable thing to have done.

Did you find still more people with trouble using Premiere and new MacBook Pros? I wonder about the particular graphics card.

You may know of Larry Jordan, an experienced video editor and trainer. He wrote an article describing extensive testing of Final Cut and Premiere on a new MacBook Pro and apparently was not bedeviled by crashes. I haven't read the comments, usually numerous.

Yes that was me on the Adobe forum Richard. Personally I havent met any Macbook 2016 owners, but from what I can tell since it came out numerous Mac and tech sites have reported about tthis issue. Its been about 1,5 months now. Apparently Apple themselves claimed, Sierra 12.12.2 would fix any graphic issues. Again many sites and users reported that the update didn't fix their issues. I can confirm this myself now. What baffles me the most though is that when I spoke to Adobe and Apple support today, both claimed they haven't heard of this issue yet . That must either mean they don't speak the truth or they are extremely ignorant to what's been reported by so many about this issue since it turned up when the first users received their machines and tried to work with Adobe software . I really don't know what to say about this. I just hope that this issue will be fixed very shortly since many people rely on this set up to work in a reliable way. At least my Apple support guy (who also claimed not to have heard anything about this issue before today) told me he will definitely follow up on this.

So all I can do is wait

Among the support sites reporting graphics issues with Premiere and MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is a different thread at Adobe with at least 21 posts.

As is nearly inevitable there are more questions than answers.

Also, regarding Larry Jordan's articles, he was testing with the Radeon Pro 460 GPU.

Good luck,

Yeah that was my thread, posted the same one on here as on the Adobe forums. Just to see where the problem is coming from.

Somebody from Adobe just replied with:

"We're aware of this issue and are working on a fix."

But I still want to know if everyone who is experiencing this should be worried about their hardware or if it's really a software related problem. In other words, are these fixes going to be working around "bad" hardware or is it really something wrong in Adobe's software interfering with this new Macbook? It's very vague.

The only solution (that only seems to work for some) I've found somewhere else is to switch your render engine to "Metal" in Premiere.

But if anyone out there knowns more about this problem, I'd love to hear about it!

About your hardware concern from what I am picking up from most people experiencing this issue its only happening with Adobe software (mostly Premlere Pro and Media Encoder). Its the same what I am experiencing. I haven't tried it myself but I even read several posts saying that FCP X does NOT have this issue on the new Macbooks. So overall it seems only a software related issue which in a way would be good news
