Repair Mac Target Disc Mode

I have a 4 year old iMac which is in a continual loop after an os update. It turns on with an update bar. The bar updates and then goes to a grey screen for a few minutes and then starts again. I have tried recovery mode which I can't access. Internet recovery mode works but after the process, the loop starts again.

I can access the hard drive in target mode on my MacBook air but because it is running Sierra I get the message "You can’t use this version of the application “Disk Utility” with this version of MacOS.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix my iMac?

Thanks.

Tygb,

Unless you have a solution for a problem, please start your own thread. Solving multiple people's issues in the same thread can often lead to the wrong solution being tried by the wrong person, and leaving them in worse condition than they started.

Also I offer a tip on this thread how to solve the problem. If it does not help you, please state so, and state what you have tried when you do your own thread.
