Printer Sharing with IOS devices

MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.2.

In the past, I could share a printer from my MacBook and print from my IOS devices (iPhone and iPad) through the shares on my Mac. This is no longer working.

I can share the printers, and from the IOS device, I can see and print to the shared printers. However, the IOS device shortly reports that the "printer is offline" (it isn't), and I never see any print jobs enter the printer queue on the MacBook.

iPhone is running 10.2.

This is a problem I am troubleshooting on my mac devices on my network, in response to a customer who is having a similar issue (IOS devices cannot print through shared printers on an iMac).

Pursuant to another thread, I went into CUPS and checked on Allow Internet Printing. This didn't fix the problem though.

Summary: I can print from the Macbook. Shared printers can be seen at the iPhone, but print jobs do not print, do not enter the queue, and the phone reports the printer is offline.

PaperCut has some mumbo-jumbo here:

You need to have installed a PaperCut app on your mac to support Ipad to printer printing.

Supports presto.

I'd say ParperCut has a problem with 10.12.2.

If you’re running PaperCut version 14.3 or above, simply re-run the Control Printer Monitoring.command - which will ask you if you want to update your CUPS sandboxing settings. Type ‘y’ and Enter. Once this is done, printing should work again.

install the latest version. [ standard fix ]

I do not know about this problem. I did read that linux version of cups has the ability to support shared airprinters.

printing to a non-airprinter from an iPad

To print from the iPad, your going to have to install some more software:

-- install a printer app on the ipad. many printer makers have iPad applications for their printers. Look in the app store

-- install enabling software on a computer which you have connected the printer

Thank You for your response, which is very informative. Unfortunately, this does not solve the issue of printing to a network printer via shares on a mac os device. This is needed for support for a program (PaperCut) which tracks and authenticates users for printing. I will discuss this with PaperCut to see if they support Presto, or possibly have a different solution. In the past, they simply recommended sharing the printer(s) on mac os, then searching for the shared printer on the ios device (using the built-in Print function). And in the past, this has worked. Just puzzled at why it's not working now.
