This finally solved my problem too. Turning up Bluetooth volume is done the same way as turning up the phone volume (side buttons on the iPhone) but has to be done while a call is in progress - ie while the Bluetooth is engaged! You will see it say Bluetooth volume on the phone screen when you do this. Turn the volume down on the car console (doesn’t have to be super low, just maybe below 40) and turn the Bluetooth volume up on the phone itself. This did finally solve my echo problem.

My wife's 2016 Highlander had this exact issue when she switched to a new iPhone. Turning down the volume in the car makes a huge difference. If she turns the speakers to a moderate volume the echo disappears completely for us.
I’ve had ‘per call success’ removing the echo on my 2017 Highlander with IPhone 7 by pushing mute icon (on the phone) for a few seconds during the call, then off again. Caller indicates clear echo as soon as I do that. This has to be performed on every call, but at least the system usable.
Yes Paul - we would get the echo both placing and receiving calls. Simply turn the volume ALL THE WAY UP on your iPhone, then, control the volume of your call from you car radio, not the iPhone. Hope this works for you - our callers are no longer complaining about the echo.

This is not an Apple issue, it is a Toyota issue. Specifically, Toyota tells me that it is a JBL issue since they make the radio. I have both iPhones and Samsung phones, and they both have the same echo problem.
The only solution that I have found is on a "call by call" basis. When on a call, the person in the car can turn the volume of the radio down very low and then right back up and the echo will go away. My Highlander has been in the shop 4 times since we purchased it in September, and it will go back in again tomorrow for the 5th time. They have done software updates, and are waiting for JBL to provide another update.
I read somewhere along this thread that turning off noise cancelling on the iPhone accessibility settings can help. I did that on my iPhoneX, and it seems to have made a huge difference. I had one exception after changing the setting, and tried the volume trick and that seemed to work, so I think I'm back in business with my iPhoneX and 2017 Tundra. Thanks the contributors who have kept this thread alive!
This worked for us!! Had the same echo issue as everybody. 2017 Highlander and we both have Iphone 7s. Turning off noise canceling on the iPhone gets rid of the echo. Thank you.
On our new 2017 Highlander using an iPhone 7 (IOS 11.2) the other party gets the echo, whether incoming or outgoing. Tried numerous settings with no change. However for me, it seems that by pushing the mute button on (on the phone) for a few seconds during the call and off again that the echo clears for the other party.
I had a long conversation with Toyota today. They confirmed that they haven’t been able to keep up with Apple’s IOS upgrades. They have no timeline on their updates, but keep an eye out for a software upgrade for EnTune
I agree. This did not solve my problem with the echo either. The only thing that I have found that helps is once the call is in progress, and you hear the echo....have the person in the car turn the volume way down, and then back up, the echo will go away after that. What ***** is that you have to do that for every call you make.
The only thing we have found to have any effect is that you have to turn down the volume. The higher the volume, the worse the echo is...
I see that you're having some issues with the Bluetooth connection on your car stereo, and I'm happy to help. Please review all of the steps in this article, including contacting the car stereo manufacturer to inquire for a firmware update if necessary.

We own a 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. When i would make a phone call, using an iPhone 6s, and use the bluetooth of the car, i would rrceive complaints / comments from the person i am talking with that there is an “echo” heard in the call. The solution is to, connect the phone to the car, place your call, then turn the volume on the iPhone as high as it will allow - control the volume of your call using the car/radio controls - not the controls of the iPhone. It worked for me & solved the problem. Dealer said Toyota has a service bulletin out on this issue.
I also have the problem using bluetooth in my 2015 toyota highlander only in the last couple months. Toyota suggested turning volume down that seemed to help. I tried bluetooth phone call with older iPhone and also got the problem making me think it is a problem with the car bluetooth connections or volume - not the phone?? Open to all solutions.
