Hi! My MacBook runs on Mountain Lion and I need to update it. I realise I cannot update to Sierra. What OS X would you recommend?

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
Use OS X El Capitan. 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks, 10.10 Yosemite, and 10.11 El Capitan all have the exact same system requirements.
macOS Sierra is the only OS currently available for download on the Mac App Store. Check the purchases tab for a previously purchased version of El Capitan or Yosemite.
macOS Sierra 10.12, OS X El Capitan 10.11, and OS X Yosemite 10.10 are currently the only versions receiving security updates.
El Capitan (10.11) is the most advanced OSX that is compatible with a 2009 Macbook. Try that.
