Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

After numerous visits to the apple Service Centre I was able to convince them to replace my display. Got my laptop back today with a brand new display.

My initial tests confirm that replacing the display has fixed the popping sound issue.

I have also noticed that the new display does not make any noises when pressed against at the bottom of the screen. The new display feels more sturdy. Hopefully the issue won't reoccur again after extended usage. Fingers crossed!!

I urge everyone having this issue to be persistent and get the display replaced.

A big thanks to everyone who updated this thread, It was very helpful in getting the problem fixed!

This is also happening with my 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. It is completely random, happens when I'm opening and closing the display, typing, using the trackpad, picking up the laptop while open or closed. It doesn't seem to matter what I've been doing on the laptop, it is very annoying and happens often. Apple does not do anything about this issue and I will be asking for further assistance until my issue is resolved.

Thank you, I follow your suggestion. I just called them again and book another appointment for another genius guy. Because they said they could not overrule the current technicians findings. (HELLOWW??)

So they still refuse that this is a "known issue". I told the Apple Support to read this thread to ensure that many people experience it and it's a big deal,,,, and the response is hilarious.

"That is a discussion thread for customers to right about their experience, this is in no way indicating a β€œknown issue” or a hardware failure"

I believe it's because there are not many of MBP 2016/2017 15 inch being sold out there compared to the whole mac lines. And this issue only happens in 15 inch design (AFAIK).

Best of luck!

I have the same problem when tilt the lap from left to right with lid opened or up and down with the lid closed.

I bought my 2017 rMBP i5, 13.3" with 256gb only 2 weeks ago and the problem arisen today !!

I see the problem is common to many customers... Apple says it is a design problem, but why do not solve it !??

i do not want a fix on display or the fixes that does not solve the problem !

I solved the issue by buying the new mbp yesterday ))) Gave the popping one to my wife -- she said she's totally ok with these sounds.

And yes, to be honest, it's embracing for Apple officials to be acting like this.

THIS IS AN ASSEMBLY ISSUE β€” and such a great company must accept it and replace the broken models all over the world for free of course.

So I left my MBP at the Apple store on Wednesday and got an email yesterday that it was ready for pickup. Around 3 days total. Much faster than anticipated.

The good news: no poppinng sound so far. Only the display was replaced. My right USB ports have been replaced and seem to be workinng fine.

The bad news: New issues have arisenn. Notice how there's a bunch of "nn" typos which I left intentionally. The "N" key works sporadically and when it does, it sometimes doubles up. Reset the SMC and PRAM, ran Onyx, the issue is still there. My "5" key wasn't even working properly out of the box but it seems to fine now. Anything else I should try out?

There's a small dent in onne of the corners which clearly wasnn't there, as if it's been bumped, as well as scuffs around where the screws are located on the bottom case. Wish I would've taken photos before sending it in as I take extremely care of my stuff and there was no cosmetic damage. On the estimation sheet it even said "Cosmetic Condition: Nothing to mention.". Withoutanny proof though it looks like this is a lost cause.

Since the nearest Apple Store is an hour away, I'll have to wait until next week to bring it in again if the "N" key issue doesn't fade away.

All in all, not the happiest camper. Don't know yet if I should request to replace the whole machine.

Currently apple is just telling to reset smc or so. The problem is within the display. When you turning on your MBP sound comes from electricity of display. I can't explain this as I am not so much expert in these hardware things.

That's correct dealmaker. I can reproduce the popping sound when i the lid is opened and i push the lid from behind in the bottom middle area. It is very frustrating as it happens itself after some time of opening the lid. When it's completely quiet in the apartment, it can make you jump on the chair. It may seem funny, but such things definitely shouldn't happen in such expensive equipment. The build quality shall be perfect - as it was in the past. Hope Apple will recognize this flaw and starts repair program regarding this issue.
