Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

So i use it the same way as any other macbook i've owned and same do my friends, they don't have it and i have it. Where are your clue's now? It's not how you use it that makes it pop it's just a hardware issue they can't find...

Are you an apple seller that wants to put the fault by 450 users themself? So we're all causing the problem by or own fault?

... the same very issue. Have been at the Genius Bar in Netherlands - the technician took a laptop and came back few minutes later telling he could not replicate the sound. If it is noisy in the office, no surprise ... He told me to make a video and describe how to replicate it, what I will probably do ...

The worst part is, that due to this popping, I do not like to use my laptop, even though besides it works great. Always thinking - when it will pop again ... I am curious, how wide is this issue? And why it is not covered more massively in the media? And strange thing - technician and Apple are behaving like there is no problem at all ...

Apple - I was thinking that you are about quality, perfection, good service ... Is it still true? We will see ...

Not an apple seller - just been in IT long enough to know everything happens for a reason - its just finding the reason.

The apple techs are focusing on what they can see - rather than environment - usage and sometimes the user.

From some of the responses to my post -- this version of the mac laptop may require you don't put it flat on a surface - instead in a stand of some sort - or it heats up. From desks, counters, tables - check to see if they get warm - or hot from the mac.

I do think it may be a problem with engineering design and manufacturing tolerances.

I think it could worth share this thread with someone from the media... those spreading rumors about new apple products would be interested. The new rumored MBP might have its reason for early appearance based on this defect/ noise. Who knows... It looks very widespread. I don't know anyone near me that have purchased the last MBP, either 13 or 15 with/ without touch bar to ask them for this noise. But definitely if we aim to have better assistance this subject must have media coverage and be publicly recognized as a product defect. (It is not described on specs)

I agreed when someone said that it is problematic working with this computer because you are always waiting for that sound to pop. It seems that technical assistance might not solve this according with some people here. Next week I will call to some friend's agencies to know if they have this MBP there and learn how's their experience in that case.

I feel sad 😭 with this situation and also it is not good idea to sell it like someone said.

Do we have any solution on how to proceed with this issue? I bought my computer in october and received it in the end of november last year. The popping sound has increased for me since I bought it, not the intensity but the "pop" is more loud than a few months ago, As I live in Sweden I called the Swedish apple support and they claimed that they never heard about this issue before.

I can constantly reproduce this issue, first when I open the lid when the laptop is cold it pops, then if I immediately start an app that uses the GPU or the CPU, I let It run for 20 sec, then its enough to just barely touch the lid to make it "pop" again. If I don't force the sound it will pop anyway after a few minutes of running the process (almost as if the hinge is building up enough thermal pressure until it releases the pop sound).

Almost two months and 27k views on this thread since the "popping sound" became known and still no official word from Apple. Let's hope for the best in the upcoming weeks.

In many markets outside US it is really difficult to get a replacement unit fast. So I believe there are many people who wait for something official from Apple (like it did with the battery replacement program of iPhone 6s) to send their laptops to an authorised dealer/service.

Hi all.

I got full refund from Apple after too many issues : batteries, then popping noise, then fail to repair the products (as they scratched the lead).

Check the consumer law in your country but basically this is how it works in Australia :

- make sure the product is still under warranty

- Take video of the issue and put them on the desktop

- call Apple or go to a store and explain your issue.

- ask for full refund as it is a major problem ("major problem : it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if they’d known about it")

- under the law, you have to give them a chance to fix the issue ("you must accept a free repair if the business offers you one.")

- tell them that you are happy to let them try once but then you will get full refund (this needs to be reported during your visit)

- they will try to fix it and most likely not fix it (as many reported here)

- then ask for full refund

- got the money back in 3-4 days and bought something else.

Here is the website for the consumer protection (ACCC) they are really helpful.

Repair, replace, refund | ACCC

Maybe apple will wake up when too many refund are asked!

I was fan of Apple for a long time but they have been really disapointing lately.

Good luck to everyone

Hi all,

I am haivng similar issues with popping. Popping is so erratic, its very annoying while working. All of a sudden I hear a loud popping noise and make me wonder whether I broke my machine.

So, I took the machine to APple store in St Davids center in Cardiff. When I described the issue I am having, they were kind of shocked to hear about it and said, its the first time they heard. I couldn't able to replicate the issue, but I played recorded video to prove the issue, they agreed and said we will look into the issue.

I got a call next day saying, they have escalated the issue to Engineers at the Apple and they wont be able to resolve the issue at this point in time. I was very furious, as this was not the first time I had an issue with the apple hardware and the service people from same store refuse to do anything about it.

I am very disappointed about the service they have provided. I am wondering has anybody heard about it? Also, is this thing is covered under warranty? Because this is hardware/design failure, I take it and apple has always focused on design.

Any comments or suggestion guys?

I would like to chime in to say this happens with my 15" 2015 WITHOUT GPU which I bought this year.

It happens 90% of the time after I wake it from sleep and run cpu/gpu intensive stuff, like Photoshop or Google Chrome. The pop in my 2015 is a little bit less loud but for the rest is exactly the same.

I opened the bottom lid and it feels the noise is coming from the heatsink area, so again, definitely related to hear, expansion and contraction. Just got to figure out what exactly.

Hello guys,

I have good news!

I just called to Apple Care and they told me that the issue is being analyzed. The recognize the problem and are working on find exactly where came from:

"...maybe is the Aluminum provider, static electric, a little piece...we can open the laptop so we are adding little listeners to find exactly the problem. Maybe at the end of this month we will find the problem, and the solution for the customer is a replacement. This happen 1% of the new MacBook Pro users."

We are moving forward! 😀

So After picking up my MBP after the third "repair", I was told that the engineers had cleaned the fan system with compressed air and had not been able to replicate the fault.

Sure enough, within a day I had the same issue ever present.

Enough was enough, I spoke to apple on the phone and demanded a refund. No more pointless repairs, no more wasted trips to the Apple Store (40 miles each time).

Lo and behold, before the can being the refund process they need a full diagnostic run on the machine to ensure the hardware is ok 😡

They've literally run every test on this thing repeatedly and I have to go back AGAIN, just for another test? Then I can begin the refund request via the online store.

Apple, if you are paying attention, this is a disgraceful excuse for customer service. This is your fault with a £1500 machine and I have to do all of the leg work?! Why can't I send the laptop to you and be done with it.

What a disappointment.
