Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

I've taken my MacBook Pro 15" 2016 in three times to Apple. Each time they sent it away and did massive replacements to components. Each time it came back and it didn't pop after. But, give it three months and its back to popping. On the third time an Apple Genius said there wasn't anymore that could be done with my laptop. He claimed that the popping noise was normal. It comes from springs inside the laptop overheating. If that is the case, what a bad design. I asked him why there are SO many people experiencing this problem and he is the only person now telling me about this and he said its not a widespread issue. I'm trying to think what to do next with it, to sell it or keep it? On eBay my laptop goes for less than $1000. If I sell it, what do I replace it with?

The problem was with the display assembly. If you had your Mac repaired by an actual Apple store genius they would've replaced the display assembly and your popping sound would be gone. Everyone else on the web (including myself) with this issue got their display assembly replaced with success.

I have a late 2018 13 inch Mac Book Pro, I have had this popping problem in past 3 months.

I took the machine to apple store last month but they claimed they were unable to reproduce the problem but cleaned the main board due to some dust and etc being there which seemed ridiculous. They asked me to bring it back if the problem persists.

I returned the machine after 20 days with same problem, this time they sent the machine to another center and changed the whole display, rear vent and wifi antenna. I just got it back and I am working with the it now and have not heard any popping so far in the first day. I am not sure if the problem reoccurs after 4-5 months as other users stated, in that case I am screwed since it will be out of warranty! Finger crossed :)

I have a 15" macbook pro late 2016 with touchbar - the macbook pro is in excellent condition with no visible dents and in excellent condition. I have not had any major issues until about 3 months ago when the loud popping sound relating to the hinge started.

The popping sound now occurs 90% of the time on opening the laptop and then constantly every 10-15 minutes or so during regular use. The popping gets really bad and loud when running energy intensive tasks like 3d rendering.

The sound can be easily created by pushing gently on the hinge - I can hear the case creaking. I have a feeling this has to do with thermal expansion but potentially adhesive failure, but am unsure.

I'd really like an official response from apple in regards to a fix - should I get some silicone and seal the edge of the hinge?

"I'd really like an official response from apple in regards to a fix"

Why do you need an official response? That issue affected the 2016 MBP's. It's now discontinued and the 2017-2019 don't exhibit this issue. If you have AppleCare just take it to Apple and have them fix it for free. Without AppleCare you'll have to foot the bill. In terms of this response you expect from Apple, I'm assuming you mean a free repair? This issue didn't affect many people so if you're expecting a repair program to avoid paying for a repair, that may not happen.

Thanks so much for your response. I am definitely not requesting a free service, and I apologize if you interpreted my post in that way.

I am simply after an official response or acknowledgement that the problem exists and a simple description outlining the cause of the problem (For example: adhesive failure can occur in the touchbar macbook pro screen after regular use, causing intermittent popping noises) and a suggested fix for the problem (For example: "Bring your macbook in for repair and we'll replace the adhesive in the screen for $(price), which will remove the intermittent popping noises").

I respectfully disagree with your statement, "It's now discontinued and the 2017-2019 don't exhibit this issue" - a browse through the most recent posts in this discussion suggests that many others experiencing this problem with post-2018 Macbook Pros.

Mine started just 5 months after the purchase, i replaced Screen and top case once when it was still under warranty(it was ok for around 3-4 months) but after the expiration of the warrant the problem appeared again and now im stuck with a laptop that needs around 50%-60% of its current value just to fix those annoying popping sounds.. and bear in mind i paid 3,3k $ . its a huge disappointment for me
