Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

"what about that Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5" (i7-8650U/8GB/256GB). "

The Surface Book has had a multitude of problems. You might want to go to Reddit if you're looking for help on buying a non-Apple laptop. This is a discussion board for Apple products. I can assure you that all other laptop brands have a handful of issues. But you can move on and find out for yourself.

"I am simply after an official response or acknowledgement that the problem exists and a simple description outlining the cause of the problem "

": "Bring your macbook in for repair and we'll replace the adhesive in the screen for $(price), which will remove the intermittent popping noises")."

I had a 2016 MBP (which I mentioned earlier) and experienced the popping noise. Apple replaced the display assembly and the popping noise was gone completely. I didn't need an official statement. For what? When companies acknowledge/admit things publicly all that does is cause an uproar (which it sounds like what you're hoping for) which would lead to class action lawsuits and force the company to repair the problem free of charge for people who are out of warranty.

" a browse through the most recent posts in this discussion suggests that many others experiencing this problem with post-2018 Macbook Pros."

Due to Fedex messing up the shipping my MacBook was damaged and Apple replaced it with a 2017. Not a single popping sound. I decided to upgrade and now I have a 2018 MBP and once again no issues with popping sound. At least I have experience with all 3 versions and there's been no reports of a 2019 having this issue.

Hello,

Yesterday I took my macbook pro to a technical service to check the display and the popping sound. Technician told me that they had no information about this fault and for Apple to make a change without cost (like the butterfly keyboard) a collective complaint must be generated.

Who knows about a website to gather signatures and demonstrate to apple all the users that have this fault?

Thank.

I don't believe one word of that. 2 years ago I had a 2016 MBP 15" with the popping noise. I took it to the Apple store Genius Bar and they said the issue was discovered and is well documented throughout the company. They took my MacBook Pro in for repair and replaced the display assembly and I've had no more issues since then. I have since upgraded to a 2018 MBP.

"What you say is false. "

Ah, I see. So Apple telling me it's a company known issue, showed me the notes from the service center, takes my MacBook in for repair, replaces the screen assembly in 4 days and my MacBook was problem free after that, and they are lying? After your earlier post I don't think it's Apple that's lying...

"Dear DPJ"

I called Apple again, told them again about the problem and told them that a user had already changed the screen because of the popping sound and that it was documented the problem in apple. What do you think? They have no information about the popping sound.

Who is lying???

Do you have the case ID to track history???

Well that's something you'll have to deal with because I, as well as many others on Macrumors had the popping sound and Apple replaced our display assemblies and that resolved the issue, so I'm not inclined to accept what you're saying as truth because what you wrote is hearsay. I don't go by hearsay, I go by facts and as a customer I got my display replaced and Apple was well aware of the problem. If they weren't aware of the problem then why would they choose to replace my display? Hmm???

This issue affected the 2016 MBP. It's getting close to year 2020, so if you're saying that Apple doesn't know anything about this problem after 4 years but has been fixing the issue by replacing the display assembly then I'm not at all believing your hearsay. There's a lot of new accounts here with some colorful stories...

"Do you have the case ID to track history???

You've gotta be kidding. That's my personal repair information. I'm not going to share that over the internet.

Hello,

I experienced the same, finally i fixed it; not exactly fixed it, but i found a way out to overcome the popping noise, you need to install a fan control app on your mbp and adjust the fan speed manually.

I am using macsfan control but you can use similar app, it helps heated air is pushed through the back vent and it won't crack noise again.

Its actually MacBook Pro design issue and apple should do something to fix the issue entirely.

"Its actually MacBook Pro design issue and apple should do something to fix the issue entirely."

It's fixed. The 2017+ models are fine. The issue was never heat related. The manufacturing in the display assembly was faulty. The people that went directly to Apple with the problem got their MacBooks repaired and there's been no more issues reported.

Sep 9, 2019 11:24 AM in response to erikendswithak

I took the liberty and contacted Apple customer support and spoke with a Tier 2 tech. There are notes in the system about repairing this issue. Not a shocker if a store isn't aware but the repair depot knows about the problem and fixed it. There's no repair programs out for this since it did not affect the majority, so if you're out of warranty you will have to pay for the repair.

And please, it's getting ridiculous the responses I'm getting. Apple makes the computer. They know how to repair their own product. Don't tell me they can't fix it. They know how to build it, they know how to fix it. Some posts here are getting pretty fishy.

DPJ

It is very strange that only you were told that the problem was identified and documented. All the users in this forum have been told the same thing as me that is not documented. Why do you say that MB 2017 was fixed and there are users who still have a problem with mb 2017 in this forum?, Others changed the display and continue with the problem and you say it was solved? Apple still does not identify or does not want to take over is the reality you like it or not. Do you think that users who have reported this problem do not want it to be incorporated as an improvement plan? It is ridiculous that a high-value MB has this problem. Who are you DPJ? Someone from Apple who wants to make you forget that the fault exists? Your answers seem very rare and my conclusion is that you are from Apple.
