Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

"All the users in this forum have been told the same thing as me that is not documented. "

Yeah tell that to the many members on Macrumors and CNET who have had their displays assembly replaced like me and ended in a success story. Also 100% of the people complaining here are new accounts. Why aren't others who've been members here for a long time complaining about it and saying it's never been fixed and can't be fixed? Hmm?

" Why do you say that MB 2017 was fixed "

I owned the 2017 and had zero problems with popping sound. The only reason I have a 2018 MBP is because something different went wrong with my MacBook and when I sent it off to Apple Fedex damaged it in service and Apple replaced it with a 2018 MBP. I'm not new to Apple. I have been a dedicated Mac user for over 22 years so I know their products and Apple's service very well.

"Apple still does not identify or does not want to take over is the reality you like it or not."

"Who are you DPJ? Someone from Apple who wants to make you forget that the fault exists? Your answers seem very rare and my conclusion is that you are from Apple."

Hey man do not address me that way. You're getting angry and that's your problem. This is a discussion board. Typical when someone's argument fails they make personal jabs. If you can't be civil then ignore my posts or move on. You seem to be nervous that my responses on this matter will block people from their agenda and the solution they are going after. Lordy.

" Do you think that users who have reported this problem do not want it to be incorporated as an improvement plan?"

Improvement plan? Ha. Someone already made it clear here that the constant posts here are an attempt at trying to get a free repair out of Apple. I don't support bullying companies or rants. If you need help, I'm always interested in helping. I help a lot members here. Ranters I don't help. Bullying attempts I don't support. From this point on please do not reply to me. You need to calm yourself.

Dear DPJ.

I only comment, and with respect so that you do not feel, that it attracts me a lot of attention that you are the only user in this forum that is against an improvement plan and that you confirm that Apple has the solution, the latter being false because Check it personally by calling the call center and if you realize there are other users in this forum that Apple has not informed you that they have identified this fault.

You make reference to external forums that have also presented the fault and that was solved in some way, you also have to consider that there are users who have not had the same fate.

Regardless of whether they have solved or not, the relevant thing is to formally know about Apple why it fails and what the formal solution is. I ask again, do you think the users on the network have notified this problem ?, That is the number that matters and that Apple should be informed.

Did you know that the same thing happened with the butterfly keyboard? Apple did not recognize its failure until users began to put pressure and collect signatures. Why can't the same be done with this fault? Why do you object?

You say there are users who are delivering ridiculous answers and other things. It is not good to refer to the rest like that, surely it would bother you or not?

Greetings.

Hi all,

I have a 2016 MBP that has the same clicking/popping sound.

Because my AppleCare is about to run out, I took it in for a Genius Bar appointment.

They sent it out for repair. Just got it back today, they did replace:

Fan right

Fan left-a

vent/antenna module

However, the sound/problem has not been fixed.

I guess I should call apple but has anyone had a proper fix, and if so, what did they replace?

Thanks

My understanding is that it's the screen and the way it fits within the lid. There is flexing here when there is heat or when opening and closing the lid. The popping is random, but can happen without touching anything due to the stresses caused by heat. Mine does it but I let it go as I couldn't afford to be without it and wasn't convinced it would get sorted without another issue occurring.

I'm not sure why Apple did the repair that way. The problem is in the display assembly. I had a 2016 MBP and the popping sound happened right away when I bought it brand new in the box directly from Apple. I took it to the Apple store and they sent it out for repair. It came back with a new display. I didn't understand why. They explained the problem is in the display assembly. Never had a single problem afterwards. Others on the web also had the display replaced and their popping issue is gone.

"However, the sound/problem has not been fixed."

"I guess I should call apple"

Yes you should. I can't imagine why you would resort to a forum right after Apple just "repaired" your MacBook and you're dissatisfied with the results. Makes no sense. Regardless what this forum tells you Apple is not going to read the replies here and simply say "Oh silly us, the forum is right, let's fix it THEIR way".

I dropped it off again at the Apple store yesterday.

this time the store is keeping it for diagnostics? And doesn’t appear to be shipping it out yet. The person assisting me said they want to test it further to be sure to tell the off site repair staff what it is. I did mention the display assembly and this and many other post.

the status on apple’s site for my repair currently shows ‘with Genius Bar staff’

not sure what’s going on with it

Nov 4, 2019 7:48 AM in response to brentg33

Apple Is not clear the fault, some users have changed the display to solve the problem but other users don't. I was told that they unknown this judgment. I think that apple doesn't want to recognize this problem.

Every day a new user is added with this problem, not just in this forum. Apple should incorporate this problem into its replacement plan without cost. He did it with the butterfly keyboard. Because you don't do this with this problem???.

Greetings.

Update to my MacBook pro repair.

I brought it back into the Apple store....

The genius bar at the store wanted to keep the machine for a few days to see if they could pinpoint the issue before sending away for repairs.

After about 3 days, i called the store.....they still had it and the staff said they could not replicate the noise.

I asked them to send it off for the second time in about two weeks...(they replaced the fans - that didn't fix it)

Got it back a few days later, they work receipt show a replaced display assembly.

Problem seems to be fixed.

Thanks to all here for their advice,

Brent

Brent, I hope that your laptop is fixed. For me, I've been to the Apple store three times. Each time the popping noise would be fixed for three months and then it would start up again. I have two receipts that show the display assembly was replaced and each time it hasn't made a difference. My warranty is done and now I think the only option is to sell it and buy another model.

Having the same issue as well. But I have a Macbook Pro 13" from 2015. Diagnostic test came back clean, did a SMC and MV-ram reset as well, no change. Noise seems to be coming from the top right of keyboard. I guess directly above where one of the fans would be, not hearing it from the screen as some posters were describing. Frequency of this weird, plastic clicking/popping sound has only increased with time. Worried about my Macbook suddenly crashing due to this faulty hardware issue. Has anyone had there computer looked at by the genius bar to fix the part out of place/or whatever else is going on? What were you charged?
