Why are my Insignia USB 3.0 hub and Ugreen USB 3.0-to-ethernet adpater showing up as USB 2.0 devices in System Information?

Around a year and a half ago, I got an Insignia USB 3.0 hub (this one, I think). A couple of months later, I also got a Ugreen USB 3.0-to-ethernet adapter (this one). I was just now re-installing the driver software for ethernet adapter, and I went to System Information to check if it installed correctly. I'm not sure why, but I think that both devices are actually being recognized by the computer as USB 2.0 devices, since the hub (listed as "USB2.0 Hub") and the adapter (listed as "AX88179") both have speeds of "Up to 480 Mb/sec." Since they're USB 3.0 devices, shouldn't the speed be 5Gb/sec (and shouldn't the hub be listed as "USB3.0 Hub")? For comparison, both of my Western Digital 1TB USB 3.0 external drives have speeds of "Up to 5Gb/sec" when connected directly to the computer (though, when connected via the hub, the speed drops down to "Up to 480Mb/sec"). I've included screenshots to show what I'm talking about (for some reason, I couldn't insert more than two screenshots, so I haven't included screenshots for the external drive). Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?

UPDATE: I decided to try connecting the hub to my computer with the USB cable from one of my external hard drives, and now it's showing up as "USB3.0 Hub" (as well as "USB2.0 Hub" - I'm not sure why). I have no idea why that makes a difference, though. The cable that came in the box definitely looks like it's USB 3.0-compatible (it has the telltale blue piece in the plug), so I'm confused as to why it's making the hub show up as USB 2.0. Can anyone help me?

Good news, You have a Via VL812 chipset, you might need a firmware update for it and the other is an ASIX AX88179... The bad news is that both are not fully supported out of the box in Sierra. The Manufacturer does have some drivers for Mac available on their website:

Again proceed at your own risk...

good luck!

Well, that of course didn't help with the USB hub, since you didn't provide any driver updates for that. However, it unfortunately also doesn't work for the ethernet adapter. I uninstalled the old driver, and then I went to the link that you posted. I downloaded and installed the most recent driver update that said that it was for 10.6 to 10.12 - but it didn't change anything. System Information still lists the maximum speed as 480Mb/sec, which means that it's only working as a USB 2.0 device. Perhaps I need to contact both Insignia and Ugreen about this, since I'd assume that it's a driver issue. What do you think?

Hi! Please first check my reply to your comment as well as the update comment that I posted as a reply to the original post of this thread.

Anyway, you mentioned updating the firmware for the VIA VL812 chipset. How can I do that? I've searched online for it, but I can't really find it.

Also, as I noted in my update post, it seems like it might be the cord that causing issues. The weird thing is that I just decided to try plugging in one of my external hard drives using the cord that came with the USB hub. Weirdly enough, it did show up as a USB 3.0 device - even though the USB hub shows up as a USB 2.0 device with that cord. This is all very confusing. Do you think that you could help me out?

Finally, another solution that I'm thinking about is just getting a USB hub that has an ethernet port included, like this one from AUKEY. If I can make sure to get the proper drivers for that, I think that it might be a better solution than trying to figure out the cable and/or driver issues with the devices that I have now. I'd rather not have to spend money if I don't have to, but does seem like a good deal for all that it offers (it's only $25, and I payed $30 for the hub and $13 for the ethernet adapter that I have now). What do you think?

Hi,

(FYI) Ironically Aukey likes to use the VIA VL812 chipset as well and they only make firmware and drivers for windows. Their tech support and customer service is dismal and do not support mac (even thought they say they do...) So, some of their products work with mac while others don't...so it is a hit or miss...

As for the other two peripherals, yes, you should contact the manufacturer...

Oh, really? On that Amazon page, a reviewer said something about downloading a Realtek driver, though he was specifically talking about the ethernet port. I'm not sure if the same applies to the USB ports. He said that he got it to work with macOS Sierra by downloading the RTL8153 driver directly from Realtek's website (since the driver provided on AUKEY's website is apparently too old), but I'm thinking that the website might be down (try for yourself here). I don't see anything on the Amazon page saying that this hub uses a VIA chipset, and I can't find a product page on AUKEY's website, so I'm not sure if that applies for this specific product. You did say that AUKEY "likes to use" VIA chipsets, so I suppose that it's possible that they didn't for this specific one. Anyway, I've sent a message to AUKEY's support team asking about it, but, since you warned me about it, I'm definitely prepared not to get good customer service (perhaps I won't even get a reply). Since I have Amazon Prime, though, I'm thinking about just going ahead and purchasing it and hoping that I can get it to work. If I can't, it'll only be a small fee to return it.

And, yeah, I think that I'll go ahead and contact both Insignia and Ugreen to see if they can help with the devices that I already have. I've already contacted Insignia, so I hope that I get a useful reply. If not, I might be able to get in touch with Best Buy support, since I bought the hub there and since Insignia is (I'm pretty sure) owned by Best Buy or something like that. As for Ugreen, I'll contact them soon, but I'm a little bit worried that they won't get back to me or that they won't be able to help much, seeing as they're a company located in China.

Here's to hoping that either I can get the AUKEY to work or that both Insignia and Ugreen get back to me and are able to help me!

Also, thanks for your help so far!
