What exactly happens when you factory reset your phone??

So I want to sell my old iPhone 5c and I've read how to go about it, but what is the next person going to have to do once I erase all the data and settings off the phone? Will they just have to sign into their iCloud account and be able to use it or will there be more steps for them? Would I label it as unlocked?? Also it's carrier unlocked right now, will it still be after I go through the process?? I'm asking because I don't want to tell them any false information about the phone..

Factory resetting or Restoring as it is known it wipes all user data from the device and puts everything back the way it was when it was first taken out of the box. The iOS version is not changed however. If the iPhone was updated it will keep the updated iOS version, but will be at the setup screen for the new user to set up.

The New user will need to do exactly the same thing you did when you first set it up when you bought it. It will be in exactly that state assuming you follow the steps in this support document:

What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The New user can then go through the setup process as you did originally.

You should only label the iPhone as unlocked if it was in fact officially unlocked from purchase or you had it unlocked by the carrier it was locked to at any point. Restoring will not unlock it if it is locked, nor re-lock the device in either of these cases.

If the iPhone was unlocked by any other mechanism, be it via a website or a service center it will likely re-lock when it is restored.

Follow the steps in the Article above to completely remove your Apple ID from the device so the new user can set it up with their own.

MetroPCS will only be able to unlock it if its actually and currently locked to them.

If it was unlocked in any way, it would not be locked to MetroPCS. And if it was unlocked from a different carrier, it would relock to that carrier, not MetroPCS, once restored.

If it is currently unlocked, you should be able to place a sim card from any other carrier different from MetroPCS and it should work. If it were locked to MetroPCS for any reason you'll get an error when trying to insert the sim card from a different carrier.

Beyond that, the only way to know if it will lock to a carrier is to restore it and try to activate it afterwards with a sim card from a different carrier. If it works its likely unlocked.

I bought the phone off eBay from a company that buys and sells phones on there and I purposely bought that one because it was carrier unlocked for all carriers so I could use it for metro pcs. So I should call metro and unlock it from then before resetting it in order for the phone to remain carrier unlocked??
