Macbook won't wake from sleep since installing Sierra

Hi all,

I saw here some old posts connected to this problem, but I didn't found any working solution.

I updated to Sierra like 5 month ago, and since then have wake up problems. At beginning it was sporadically, but few weeks ago it started to be constant "sleep-no_wake" pattern. I did all SMC/ NVRAM/ resets, I setup "no sleep on power", I cleaned all external stuff with kextstat | grep -v com.apple command.

On top of that, sometimes it restarts automatically, it happens just after finally I made it start (by persisting play with SMC reset combined with "power up" button") or almost every night around 4am (even if I switched off automatic updates).

And finally I reinstall with totally fresh sierra from scratch - no additional software... and no change.

I've got external disc and install sierra on them to see if this is hardware or software problem ... and again - no change.

My last resort is to check with yosemite(it was original system on my macbook pro late 2015) and I will do that.

But meantime - if any of you have any suggestions, is there any other magic trick - please share!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12)

I had the exact same symptoms on my MBP 15-inch mid 2015 and found that disabling Power Nap solved the problem.

Interestingly enough, this was only after many phone calls with Apple Support who requested that I bring my MBP to the local Apple Store where they ran a comprehensive diagnostic. I was told the machine failed the hardware test (although I hadn't witnessed any other odd behavior) and they replaced the logic board. While the machine was being repaired, I saw the following Apple Support document (published August 11, 2017): If your MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) won't wake from sleep - Apple Support

Reading between the lines, I suspect Apple is aware of the issue for this specific machine, in any case, but doesn't have a solution other than the workaround of disabling Power Nap suggested in the above article. This doesn't explain if it is related to hibernation, Time Machine activity or other. I do use a 4th generation Time Capsule, but I have other Macs running Sierra set up with Power Nap that backup to my TC and they don't have the black screen on wake issue described here. Perhaps it is hardware related for the MPB 15" mid 2015 model.

Very strange but I wanted to add to this thread since someone may discover the interaction(s) that are at the heart of this issue.

In case this helps someone identify or resolve the problem... I have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro and started experiencing this problem several months ago (May 2017?). At first, the problem was intermittent and only happened when the machine was asleep overnight. It progressively got worse to the point that the machine would not wake properly (i.e., backlight on, maybe a mouse cursor visible, otherwise unresponsive--including to ping from another machine) after sleeping for several hours. No clues in the system log. The problem only occurred if I left the machine connected to the power adapter. Turns out I had Power Nap disabled while on battery power. Disabling Power Nap while connected to the adapter alleviated the problem. Sure wish I knew the root cause and why it progressively got worse.

Read these articles : macOS Sierra: Set sleep and wake times for your Mac

  • With Wake on Demand enabled (see below) and your Mac in sleep mode, your Mac will occasionally wake for a brief time, without lighting the screen, in order to maintain active shared service registrations with the Bonjour Sleep Proxy. On some Macs, sounds from the optical drive, hard drive, or fans may be heard during these brief periods. Note: Removing a sleeping Mac from the network will automatically remove its registered shared services from the Bonjour Sleep Proxy.
  • Bonjour Sleep Proxy runs on an AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule, or Apple TV (second generation or later)--when no AirPort base station or Time Capsule is present on the network--with the latest software updates installed.
  • Portable Macs with Wake on Demand enabled will only perform Wake on Demand functions when they are connected to a power adaptor and either the built-in display is open or an external display is attached.

Same issue, now solved. I have a MacBook Pro mid 2015 which had no problems initially with Sierra then after a couple of months (can't remember which update it started with) on sleeping after closing the lid it would not wake. On opening the lid the apple logo lit up but the screen was blank with a faint residual light (so a dark bluish-grey not completely black), usually showing a frozen cursor arrow. This only happened after an appreciable period of time, say overnight or a few hours. I tried many of the cures suggested online without any success. Eventually I tried this: System Preferences - Energy Saver - in the battery power tab, untick "Enable Power Nap on battery power" - in the Power Adapter tab untick everything except "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". This worked for me, but from my extensive web searching it seems to be a multi-cause issue with different solutions for different people. For me the real mystery is this: my wife has the same model MBP, with an identical software configuration, including the same Sierra updates, but has never experienced this problem!!!

Same here. But now solved!

I had this issue for long time and Apple couldn't find a solution even to the point which I got a replacement MacBook Pro.

Turning off the "Power-Nap" solved this issue after having it for 10 months.

Seems like there is a glitch when the Mac trying to use the Time Machine while sleeping in a power nap mode.

I hope they will fix it in the next OS.

I'm almost certain that you're dealing with a hibernation problem, not a simple "sleep" problem.

I once had similar issues as you've had; I disabled hibernation; don't need it, didn't need it, don't want it.

Here's how to disable hibernation:

(Note: Unlike some commands, you do have to begin this commandline with the "SuperUserDO" command).

Open Terminal and type in (or copy/paste) the following command into a Terminal window:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

That command will permanently disable hibernate mode.

If you're done running commands in Terminal, type “exit” to get out of commandline mode, & then quit Terminal.

============

And after disabling hibernation, if you want to free up the disk space that hibernation file(s) used, type or copy/paste this commandline into Terminal:

sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage

============

If you later want to re-activate hibernation, type or copy/paste this commandline into a Terminal window:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

============

Disabling the Power Nap is defiantly solving this issue.

Wake up for Wi-Fi network access isn't the case.

Since I've disabled the power nap (a week now) this issue has been solved.

Still can't understand how no one in Apple's support knew about it even to the point where they had to replace my entire machine to a new one. (lucky me).

Ive been 10 times on the phone with them and 3 times in store for repairs.

Only last issue I have which is unsolved is the clicking sound from my MacBook Pro 15" late 2015. It happens only on startup or wake up (1 click at the time).
