change root password from admin account

Apparently in order to run git I need to enter my root password once. I disabled root long ago, and I have an admin account. How do I change root pw without knowing root pw? How did root pw ever get set or changed without me knowing it?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

There are a few ways you can go about doing this. You can go directly through disk utilities (assuming you already have an admin account you know the login of) and click on the edit tab and change root administrator password. Now if this prompts you to have the root admin password already, which I do not think it will since you said you have disable the root user, then you can change it in single user mode through the guides that I will post below.
