Adding Server to Sidebar

I work in a company that uses older software for various reasons we don't need to get into. I'm not the administrator, and I'm not extremely knowledgeable about what goes on under the hood.

My computer was just upgraded from OS 10.7.5 to OS 10.8.5, and I can't place an icon of our external server on the sidebar. I can connect to the server, and get to it through Go>Network>Server>Connect and selecting the volume, but when I click on the volume and try to drag the icon to the sidebar, it blinks like it added the item to the sidebar, and then either deletes it or hides it, but the number of items in the sidebar doesn't change. I've tried the same with modifier keys, but nothing works.

As a work-around, I've dragged the icon of the server to my HD and dragged it to the toolbar at the top of the window. Although that works, I'm used to being able to use the sidebar, and that is what I'd like to do now.

Any ideas about what I can try?
