How to start Apple Hardware Test on Mac Pro 4,1 5,1 El Capitan?

Pressing and holding "D" and Option+"D" at start up are not working. What happens is that the grey screen takes longer than usual and loads the Apple logo to display login screen. No hardwares are connected except a keyboard, a mouse and a monitor.

My OS X: El Capitan 10.11.6

Any of your help would be appreciated.

Mac Pro (Mid 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12.2), 2 x 6-core 3.45GHz 64GB 850 Evo SSD

Newer Macs can use a Hardware Test downloaded via the Internet but I believe the Mac Pro is too old for this. The Mac Pro probably did have a local copy originally installed when it was first sold but I suspect the Mac has either been reformatted since then or had a new hard drive or both. If you have the original DVD installer discs then these may well have a copy on them which you could either boot from or use to reinstall the AHT software, however again I suspect these like mine have long ago been lost.

Someone has therefore kindly gone to the effort to compile a list of versions of AHT software and to provide the direct Apple download links for them from Apple's servers. Apple do not themselves provide this information even though the still make these files available. See https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest

While you could run the AHT software from a DVD or USB external drive this article Apple Hardware Test will not start up seems to explain how to reinstall them on to your normal boot drive. I have been separately told this still works for El Capitan and later but not tried it.

Solved! By Apple Hardware Test from Github. But you need USB thumbdrive and a basic knowledge of using command in Terminal (i.e. Selecting correct drive name). My system was successfully diagnosed with the result "no trouble found" which is true, so that "if the test is still relevant today" is yet to find out.

Not a correct instruction for Mac Pro but I think it's for iMac. Because on the step where you have to press "Power", Mac Pro shut down.

Anyways, thank you guys especially John Lockwood!
