a1226 or a1260 MacBook Pro good for El Capitan?

Hello, I was considering buying either an a1226 2007 MacBook Pro or the later a1260 model. These pre unibody computers are some of my favorite in design and I'd like one to use as a second machine. I was wondering if they would run El Capitan well, and if not what would be the best modern OS X to run on them. I know these machines were part of the NIVIDIA 8600 fiasco a couple years ago, but I still want to give them a try. Thanks
