But they generally do not ask, UNLESS you are asking them to unlock a firmware password, of get around FileVault, or in anyway gain acesss to the Mac (like you forgot your password), etc.... Then they want proof of ownership.
Otherwise, they just want to know what problem you are having.
If that particular genius bar does ask for identification, and you cannot produce it, then they may assume that you have stolen property, and at their discretion, refuse to help you, and/or summon law enforcement. You should carry valid identification with you at all times. You should also have proof of purchase with you too.
If law enforcement asks for your identification, and you do not have it, you risk detainment until you can prove your identity to their satisfaction.
