MacKeeper - Have I got a security risk?

Earlier today I received an email from MacKeeper telling me that my security was at risk and that I should instal/buy a licence for which there is a yearly cost of $118. I'm 72 and not very confident with the computer. Can someone tell me what this all about and whether it is something I really need. If I have got a problem I usually run EntreCheck and then if is something I can't fix I take it to the store. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated. I have received four emails now from MacKeeper telling me I need to active the licence. I have an IMAC OS Lion (10.75), Intel Core i5 2.5 Gb Processor and 8 Mb memory.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

MacKeeper is trying to scam you. The very last thing you ever need on your Mac is MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, or any of the other garbageware systems out there claiming to protect your Mac. You are doing exactly what you need to do already - run an EtreCheck report if needed, and take it to the Apple Store if you need help.

Delete every email from these scam artists, and continue to delete them any time you see them. You can also clear your History and Website data on your browser, and start your Mac in Safe Mode by pressing on the Shift key when you start it up the next time. It may not stop the emails, but it won't hurt to do it just to clean things up as much as possible.

You may continue to get a lot of emails from these lowlifes, so, if you can set up a Rule in your Mail app to put emails from that sender into Junk or Trash, then you won't have to deal with them.

Best of luck,

People say MacKeeper is an adware and it's 100% scam. MacKeeper is a complete junk and if you get that thing downloaded it won't easily go away. I got MacKeeper by accident and deinstalling it didn't stop the problem. In order to permanently remove MacKeepr, I reformatted my hard drive and then fresh reinstall the entire OS. After that the pesky problem is gone. This is why it's necessary to have at least 2 hard drives (or solid state drives) plus a cloud storage if you have a lot of important files and software applications. If you ever get any other warning email titled "Your security is at risk!! Install (insert name here) to protect your computer from malicious viruses" do not click the email link. The link will lead unsuspecting victims to a fake website filled with malware traps. Once you give out your log-in credentials (and other private info) the bad guy will steal them. If the email's sender is someone you don't know (or a company you never expected) then mark it as spam, throw it in trash, and permanently delete it. Many fake emails pretend to be from legit 3rd parties (ex: Google, Microsoft and McAfee etc). If you don't remember doing any business with them or if you don't remember setting up an account with them, ignore those fake emails. Even emails from B of A can be fake since scammers/ hackers are becoming more sophisticated. If you're in doubt always contact the official vendor, bank and other organizations. And don't forget to turn on spam filter in your email inbox. I hope my comment helps you.

Hi there - these guys are a real con and they're linked (in my opinion) to spam emails - after you unsubscribe (or try to). Like a dick I tried them and realised I'd heard of them before so stopped. Then in my Mac Mail junk folder today the dreaded Pharmacy Viagra Pills email arrived. So my advice if this has happened to you is: Go to Mac Mail preferences and under Rules set a rule which redirects all spam mail with those words from the particular email address etc to support<at>mackeeper.com. Karma is a wonderful thing.
