After update to watch os 3.1.3 the battery died within 12 hours

I have an Apple Watch first generation. It has worked fine and normally after a day I have ca 30% battery left. Yesterday I updated to OS 3.1.3. Today, a normal day, the battery drained very quickly after having been in flight mode and died after 12 hours of use.

What should I be looking for?

Hi

Battery life varies depending on use and other factors.

In tests, for example, Apple achieved 18 hours of battery life with the following usage: 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use and a 30-minute workout with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth. Other examples are detailed here:

http://www.apple.com/watch/battery.html

Apple's tips for maximising battery life on Apple Watch are detailed here:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/#watchtips

If your watch is experiencing significantly shorter battery life than Apple's examples suggest that you should expect, try the following steps:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Close all open apps on your iPhone and then restart both your iPhone and your watch:

Unpair and re-pair your watch:

Under previous software versions, some users reported experiencing battery life issues in connection with using corporate profiles and/or Exchange Calendars. If you are using an Exchange Calendar, one or more of these steps may help:

  • Archive your Exchange Calendar for all items before today.
  • Remove / delete all old inbox messages relating to calendar invites (accept and decline notifications).
  • Create a rule in your Outlook Mail account that moves all future accept and decline replies, immediately upon receipt, into a separate mail folder that does not sync with your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Check your Exchange Calendar for errors.

Finally, it may help to:

Having tried the previous steps, if your watch experiences significantly shorter battery life than Apple's examples suggest that you should expect, I suggest contacting Apple Support, making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance, including - if recommended - to have your watch inspected and serviced (whether under warranty or via chargeable service):

All,

As I mentioned previously, Apple Support contacted me as a result of my question in this thread. We conducted diagnostic activities on the watch and information was sent to Apple yesterday. For me the anomaly occurs when the watch is switched in and out of Flight Mode. I was impressed with the support experience and look forward to the problem being fixed in the next Watch OS or IOS update.

If possible I would ask that the moderators close this post as my question has been addressed.

Hi

Try following the same steps as suggested in my previous reply in this thread:

Re: After update to watch os 3.1.3 the battery died within 12 hours

Whilst I appreciate that nothing else has changed other than installation of updated software, the steps have previously helped others, over time, with the same issue - including after software updates where nothing else is different. Check battery performance after each step, before moving on to the next.

Hi Jonathan,

Since I was travelling I didn't give a verbose description of the problem. The watch has been working fine for six months until the update yesterday. It was averaging more than 18 hours. I work in IT and am the family IT administrator so everything is up to date etcetera. The watch was fully charged when I left home this morning at 05:30. I took a one hour flight to meet a client. As I always do, put the phone in flight mode which put the watch in flight mode. Was surprised when I reached my destination that the watch was at 56%. Watch was OK during the day but when I boarded the flight and put the phone back in Flight Mode the watch gave a message that the battery was low (10%) I was given the option to go into "Low Battery Mode" which I did, and the watch died. I have not added any new apps, nothing has changed,

Same issue here. Until last week I was going to bed at 11pm and putting my watch on charge with 30-40% battery. Now after the update, it's at 10% at 5pm. I've even wiped and restored my Apple Watch with no help there.

I find the Apple tech's replies to be quite condescending and not open to the suggestion that the only recent change has been the Watch OS 3.1.3 update. I too am an IT techo and am aware of the possible causes, but the update is the only change I've recently made.

How do we ask Apple to respond to this? I'm assuming it's almost impossible to roll back the update on my Watch. Any ideas?

Hi

It is not possible to downgrade watchOS.

If you have not yet done so, before contacting Apple I suggest trying the steps described in my previous reply, including closing all apps on your iPhone and restarting both devices.

If you would like to discuss your issue with Apple Support, links are included at the bottom of my previous post.

Same issue as well. I have 2 Apple Watches (original version): 38 and 42mm and both have the same issue. I noticed that during the night (from 4 AM to 1 PM) the watches consume about 50% of battery without using them because I take the watch off during the night.

With watchOS 3.1.1 from 4 AM to 1 PM the battery drain was about 15% (now 50%)

That's all well and good Jonathan, and thanks for the insight, but I'd venture that most of us were having no such issues before WatchOS 3.1.3 was installed. I was easily getting well into a second day's use with OS 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 - now I can't get through a normal 8 hour work day. I left for work this morning at 8:30am and by 11:30am, my battery was down to 46%! Nothing has changed in terms of my workflow except the 3.1.3 update...

I am also having this same issue. I upgraded to 3.1.3 Sunday.

Before then I'd go to work at 8:30am I put it on, battery 100% and at 10:30pm when I take off the watch, my battery is normally at 52% or around there each night. This is the same even on weekends as the same apps and such run each day close to the same, but never under 50% battery when I take it off.

I look today at 1pm and my battery is at 41%, now here it is almost 7pm and I am at 29%.

There is definitely something wrong with this update.

The steps placed in this post from Jonathan do not help my issue either.

A shame.

Update - I powered off my iPhone and my Apple Watch (Series 1 btw) and powered them back on. Strangely, my watch now reports that it's still at 100% battery after 3 hours of normal use with several notifications etc... Not sure if the power recycle has definitively fixed the issue but I'll report back my findings in the next day or so.
