After update to watch os 3.1.3 the battery died within 12 hours

I have an Apple Watch first generation. It has worked fine and normally after a day I have ca 30% battery left. Yesterday I updated to OS 3.1.3. Today, a normal day, the battery drained very quickly after having been in flight mode and died after 12 hours of use.

What should I be looking for?

I also am very unhappy with battery life under 3.1.3

I have 2 gen 1watches. The one at 2.2 uses 30% in 12 hrs. The one at 3.1.3 runs out of battery at 8-9 hrs with less functions active. Unfortunately 9 hr life doesn't get me thru the day. Strong disincentive to purchase another watch in the future- pretty useless if you have to take your watch off to recharge mid-day.

Since posting, Katie from AppleCare contacted me (so just an update thus far) and we have been working to diagnose the issue on my end.

Since updating... my battery would drain very fast while at work unless I was connected to wifi while there. Service is pretty bad in my building. For the last few weeks its been operating normally (if on wifi) until today, as she wanted to run tests so I had to turn off Data, wifi and submit logs all day.

Arrived at the office at 9:30am and at noon was at 80ish% and now at 33%, but at 2:30pm I did turn mobile data back on. Appears my issue is, it constantly needs wifi to function properly or will suck the battery life. But it is not a daily issue, which is weird, just thankfully today during our process it did reproduce the problem.

I'm continuing to assist Apple Diagnosing it though and will continue to do so until a fix is released.

Hello ...

I also *had* the same problem.

My advice: ignore all the turning on and off stuff; and go straight to a complete reboot of the watch.

... Meaning: delete the watch from the iPhone, and then go through the install process.

... That's the bit where you pointed your phone at the swirly image on the watches face.

(I didn't opt to keep a backup from the watch.)

Brand new install fixed my problems, and yes: the watch battery does last much longer.

Hope it helps.

I had the same issue for a few weeks... and finally found a solution yesterday.

You don't need to restore your iPhone or your Apple Watch, or to unpair and repair it.

What I did was simple, yesterday around 9pm my Apple Watch battery was around 10%.

I plugged it to recharge it and around midnight when I went to bed, I turned it off until this morning.

This morning I turned it on. And today with a more heavy use I still have 52% compared to the 10% yesterday.

It also repaired something, in the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, in usage, I had the same time of standby, and use. Not anymore, now everything works as expected.

I hope it can help someone,

I haven't thought of turning it off, but it's the only thing I haven't tried so I will tonight and we'll see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion and glad to see you had good luck.

I wanted to share my experiences with you as a 30+ year Apple user who knows a thing or two about Apple products. I've had my original Apple Watch sport since 2015 and it's been fantastic up until 3.1.3. In fact, before 3.1.3 I can always remember commenting to myself that I can't believe how much battery is left after a 15-16 hour day (usually north of 50 percent and I was getting alerts and emails and all kinds of stuff).

Anyhow, now I'm sitting here rebooting both my iPhone and watch again because I'm not even 8 hours into my day and have the 10 percent warning again for the 3rd time this week.

I just returned from a visit to the Genius Bar and met a nice person who did a full hardware diagnostic. Told me that my watch was undergoing normal wear and tear, at 90 percent of total life and that they can't replace or do anything until it's 80 percent or less. He said I could have it sent out and looked at just in case but it would take 11 days and I would likely get the same response he was giving me. And that makes sense, especially since the diagnostic comes back clear.

I've been reading a lot on the Apple support forums and we all have the same issues with battery life since 3.1.3 ... not all of us, as I can see from this thread, but for many of us we can trace it back.

I've done every single thing there is, from rebooting multiple times to choosing watch faces with very little going on in the background to lowering brightness to reducing motion - you name it, I've done it -- and that includes unpairing and repairing. Everything and nothing has changed. I've even deleted every 3rd party app. I've turned off wrist to raise so I have to tap the watch to turn it on. I'm literally not even really using the watch and enjoying it at all simply to get to the bottom of it, and there's nothing at all that works.

So all I can do is say what I hate to hear and that's hang in there and it's not just you. I wish there was more that could be done. And perhaps rebooting and some of those other troubleshooting methods will help you, but so far nothing has helped me. Now I look forward to 3.1.4 or 3.2 or whatever comes next to see if there's a difference. **** (did I mention I have my watch on mute too?)

Sigh.

Try to recharge it full to 100% then turn it off for an entire night. It worked for me.

If the problem continues, maybe try to restore "as new" your iPhone and Apple Watch (that means not to use an iCloud backup). Maybe there is a bug in iOS which replicates on Watch OS.

For information, I also have the 1st gen Apple Watch, the Sport 38mm and the battery life is back to normal in my case. The best was Watch OS 1 or 2, I could use my watch for 2 days in a row without recharge. Now it's about 1,5day max.

Unfortunately, the only thing that solved it for me was a full reset. On the Watch app, I went to general, reset, and erase watch content and settings. After it reset, I set it up again as a new watch. So I didn't restore any settings from iCloud. The first time I tried to restore from iCloud, the issue persisted. It wasn't until I set it up completely new again that the problem was resolved.
