I'm at "Installing..." step 4. When I double click MiniDPVGAFirmwareUpdate.pkg it says it can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer... supportdownload.apple.com.
What do I do now?

In my case it won't install. I tried first with an Optoma projector and then with an old SVGA monitor connected. Both were identified correctly by the Mac, but installation of the firmware updater failed.
I'm running Sierra (10.12.4) on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro (15 inch).
BTW: for all its lack of performance, the adaptor is running rather hot.
It turns out all I needed to do was connect everything up before I powered up my epson projector. Thank you Niel for your kindness.

Thank you. Now once I've agreed to the legal terms, it says it is incompatible with my OS and may fail. When I choose to install anyway, the installation fails.
What do I do now?
If you’re not having an issue which running the updater would correct, leave it.
If you are, ask Apple for assistance or look for other causes.
