Dock Icons Disappeared.

On rebooting, all of the icons on my dock except Calendar, Downloads and Documents (and the badge on Appstore, but not the Appstore icon) disappeared.

I've rebooted since then, to no avail. Same problem.

What do I have to do to fix this?

(And if the answer is "edit some abstruse resource file", somebody in UX needs to get fired).

Oh, it gets worse.

I updated all my installations and did a hard reboot.

Now, a few icons more icons appear in the dock than before (Pages, Appstore, Trashcan) - and several others appear as "ITunes" icons, some of them looking like they've been spun around in a slot machine. Others are still empty - although apps that are running still have dots underneath the empty space.

Anyone have any ideas here?

If this were happening to me, first thing I would try is deleting the dock preferences. One way to do that is to paste this into the Go to Folder... dialog in the Finder Go menu:

~/Library/Preferences/

press return, then from the folder which appears move com.apple.dock.plist to the trash. Logout and login.

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:

killall Dock

Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock. Move the .db to your desktop.

Then try a dock reset.

Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command

killall Dock

Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.

If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Learned from leonie.
