Hi, I bought Power Photos on a rec. from here. I have a large (2TB) library on an ext. hd. When I opened PowerPhotos, i took 6 min. to open library as opposed to 20 sec. for Photos. Is this normal? Thanks for any advice.

Probably - that is a big library and I find that as my library grows (it is more like 200 GB not 2 TB) PowerPhoto is slower to open - FatCat has good support and I suggest you contact them for support and questions on their product

With my small, 19GB library open in Photos it takes PowerPhotos about 20 seconds to open. When I close Photos and open PowerPhotos again it opens in less than 2 seconds.
So I suggest you open PowerPhotos first and then Photos.
Yes, PowerPhotos takes a long time to open, even for my smaller library. I just open it in the morning while I am reading my mail, and I keep it open in the background in case I need it.
How many smart albums do you have, Larry? My main library has twice as many items as yours and most albums are smart albums.
When I open any other library - not CPL, and no smart albums, PowerPhotos is very quick to open.
Interesting, OT. Are you using iCloud Photo Library?
My iCloud Photo Library (45.645 items) needs roughly five minutes to open in Power Photos, whether I have Photos running or not. The smaller libraries not syncing with iCloud will open much faster.
Another reason for the long startup time required may be the many smart albums I have. In my main library I have 170 smart albums that need populating in Power Photos by retrieving the photos from Photos, since they cannot be directly read from the Photos Library.
I noticed that it takes a long time for smart albums to update in Power Photos when I modify a smart album. And even Photos is slow to update smart albums and showing the busy indicator for a long time when I create more smart albums.
In the past OT has stated that he does not use ICPL - My guess is he still does not
I have 22,000 photos and 1000 videos in my Photos library using ICPL - I just timed Power Photos are 45 seconds to open with Photos not running - if I quit Power Photos and reopen soon after it opens instantly

As Larry pointed out I do not use iCPL. It seems that running an iCPL is what's causing the slow launch for PowerPhotos.
Probably not for the OP with their 2 TB Photos library 😉

True. There's no iCloud storage option big enough for a 2 TB library. That's pretty big. The OP didn't indicate how the EHD is formatted and connected to his Mac.
Not many - 14 smart albums - 12 system albums and 10 loose regular albums ( and a bunch in a couple of folders including all my iPhoto events albums)

Then the smart albums are probably responsible for my library to open so slowly in Power Photos. For each smart album Photos has to scan the complete library to be able to show the photos.
