How can I password protect my external Time Machine backup hard drive in Mac OS X v10.6?

I would like to password protect my external Time Machine hard drive. We are using an older MacPro running Mac OS X 10.6.8. We understand it might be possible with File Vault but after reading several negative comments we're not sure we won't to use it. Is there a simple and reliable method to add password protection? Thanks!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

OK, thanks for your help.........technically, I'm sure you are correct. However, it appears there is not a good, efficient, user-friendly method to password protect a Time Machine external drive in OS X 10.6.8. The 2 methods that do exist are complicated, extremely time consuming (encryption & decryption) and do not measure up to Apple's user-friendly reputation. Needless to say I will not be using either of Apple's methods. I wonder if there is a third party utility program that might do the job. Thanks again!
