Apple Pencil not pairing

My Apple Pencil will not pair with my iPad Pro. I have the latest version iOS. I connected it to the lightning adapter. It asked me if I want to pair. I tapped okay. It connected, and then disconnected seconds later. The thinking wheel kept spinning, and then finally gave me an error stating "Pairing took too long. Make sure 'Apple Pencil' is turned on, in range, and is ready to pair." It's literally plugged into my iPad, so it's in range and ready to be turned on according to the instructions. There is no way to turn it off. I've had it on the charger, so it should be charged. I've tried the suggestions aside from calling customer support, because it does allow me to tap the okay button to pair.

So, I chatted with support. Initially, what we did was reset the settings, and that didn't work. Then we restored my iPad. I did something wrong, and lost all my stuff. I followed the steps: backup the device and then restore the device. Good news is, my pencil now works. Bad news is, I have a fresh iPad. The steps worked, but if you go this route, follow the steps correctly.
