I have a few hundred photos of scanned family photos, each containing 3 or 4 separate images.
Is there any clever way in Photos (or any other tool) to split each scanned photo out from the original image? (e.g. create 4 individual photos from the original collage image containing 4)
So far, I've been doing this manually using GIMP by cropping and saving as, but this is taking forever.

Photos has no dedicated tool for this.
You can only duplicate the photo in Photos to create a separate copy for each of the sub images, then crop each copy to the relevant region.
Does your scanner have software to support the splitting into separate photos?

In Photos you have to duplicate the photos three times and crop each of the four photos do the one you want
Some scanner software has the ability to separate the photos, some does not - If yours does not I'd suggest scanning single photos rather than groups
