Convert song to acc version

I used to be able to make ringtones on my mack and sync tones to my iPhone 5s. I have tried to do this in iTunes but when I click on convert everything is gray and I can't change the song to acc version to create a ringtone.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.4

Make a ringtone...

1. iTunes prefs > General.

2. Click Import Settings… and set Import Using: to AAC Encoder.

3. Find the song you want and note the start/stop time you want the ring tone.

4. Right click - Get info, click the Options tab and set the start/stop times as above. (Note there is ~30-40 second max for ringtones)

5. Go to iTune menu File > Convert - Create AAC version. This creates a new file.

6. Drag this new file from the iTunes window to the desktop.

7. Delete the file from iTunes and also select Delete from hard drive.

8. On the desktop, rename the file whateveryouwant.m4r (first part you can change to whatever you want & change the extension to .m4r).

9. Drag the file back to the iTunes library at top left.

10. This new file will show up under Tones (at top left of iTunes).

After you create AAC version highlight song (aac version) go back to File on toolbar and Show in finder click, the song should be highlighted then drag to desktop rename the file changing only the a on the end to an r double click it you will get a message box (keep.m4a or use .m4r) Use .m4r This should send new version to ringtones in iTunes then sync phone to iTunes. This is the way I do it if there is any other way that is easier I don't know I just stick with what I know. Hope this works out for you. Then delete converted version fromiTunes.
