Camera Audio Working in background

Hi,

My iphone 7 battery has been draining unbelievably quickly compared to when i first bought it. I checked my battery percentage and found that my camera which i barely use is at the top of the list. To be more specific, Camera Audio is using up 23% of my battery life. The camera application is closed and i rebooted the device, but its still doing the same. Any info regarding this matter?

iPhone 7, iOS 10.2.1

Hi,

I've got a few ideas to troubleshoot. Before getting started, please make a backup of your iPhone following the instructions here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Once the backup is created, try the following steps in order. Test after each step by using the iPhone, then checking the battery usage. Since the battery usage is assessed over time, you may not see any changes unless you test for a at least 24 hours. Once the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue with the steps.

  1. Quit any open apps, as detailed here: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Then, restart the iPhone, following the steps here: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  2. Reset the settings on your iPhone under Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
This will not remove any of your personal data (contacts, photos, Calendar events, etc) but will revert customizable settings (wallpaper and screen brightness, alert sounds and ringtones, Date & Time settings) back to their factory defaults. It will also remove any saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, as well as any previously used APN or VPN settings.
  3. Restore your iPhone to factory settings, using this article: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory defaults
Once the restore is complete, set up your iPhone as a new device (meaning without your backup, at least temporarily). You can sign into iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and the iTunes and App Store.
If your battery usage is OK after setting the iPhone up as a new device, restore your backup as instructed here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

I would also suggest checking out the General Performance and iOS tips at the following website as an overall way to help make sure you're getting the most out of every charge: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan

I have exactly the same problem with my iPhone 8, which has just started in the last two days. 33% Camera (Audio) use over 24 hours, compared with 6% over 7 days.

I've disabled just about everything that could possibly drain the battery, with no improvement.

Resetting is not an option without an explanation as to what is going on. This just comes across as one of those typical IT "restart your PC" answers. Furthermore, this raises several questions:

  • What is Camera (Audio)?
  • If it's the camera using the microphone, why is it using it when the app is not running?
  • Why is there no setting to deny the camera access to the microphone, like there is with every other app wanting to access it?
  • What caused the sudden increase in battery use like this?

There are several reports of this issue - there must surely be an answer.
