iMac freezes - mouse, sound still working

Dear all

I do have a very very annoying problem I tried to solve reading several threads for more than a year but the problem still persists.

I have an iMac Mid 2010 which has a following symptom: It freezes, meaning I cannot click or do anything. The mouse is still moving, sound goes on no problem. The system though is not responding at all.

The problem is not easily reproducible but I am now certain that happens once I heavily use safari. It drives me crazy since this is a machine I use at work. I've seen all the posts suggesting change ram, change ssd, install from scratch, clean your imac from 3rd party software that may harm it, I've almost checked all the things but the problem is there. I've also read that the heatsink of the gpu might be dirty blocking the cooling which I will anyway try to clean and install new thermal paste. Also installing from scratch is a pain since I do have many settings on this machine. Restore from time machine is an option though.

Any help is highly needed otherwise this machine becomes useless.

Many thanks in ad

VIN, iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

Dear rkaufmann87

Here is the report, in fact that's a very useful utility, I can spot already issues I was not aware. My second hard drive is failing and I didn't know... but it's the one for storage only, the system is running on the SSD:

If you search this forum, you will find you are not alone. There are numerous reports from people having the same problem as you have. The Mac freezes when using Safari, music will play int the background if you are doing that, the mouse will move but otherwise the Mac is totally unresponsive. And the only thing you can do, is to force shut down the Mac. For most users the problem started after upgrading to Sierra. I and many other users have tried all thinkable solutions that has been put forward. None have helped. As fare as I know, the only thing that works is either going back to Yosemity, or stop using Safari. For a month or so I have only used Chrome, and have had zero crashes. Every now and then I have tried Safari, and every time the problem will show up again after a while.

So this is a software bug introduced with Sierra, and Apple has still not been able to fix it. Many people have sent bug reports to Apple about the problem. I suggest you do that as well.

I have now tried a suggested solution with deleting a lot of files from the library which I think someone suggested to you in another thread iMac freezes on safari - mouse, sound still working !

I can see that this did not work out for you, but I will go on using Safari now, and then report back. I am afraid my iMac will freeze again, and then I will just have to go back to Chrome. Sad, because I really like Safari as my default browser

Update. I have been using Chrome for a long time now with no issues. As I described above, I deleted a lot of files from the library and started to use Safari again.

Within less than 24 hours the problem was back. For me this issue started after upgrading to Sierra. I have never encountered it before Sierra. It might well not be a Sierra problem, but it for sure is a Safari related problem.

Until Apple can sort this out, I just have to use Chrome instead.
