I need to update iTunes so I can back up my phone on my MacBook Pro. I'm currently running El Capitan and don't want to upgrade to Sierra until I can make sure it won't affect my Photoshop or Silhouette Cameo programs as it has been a nightmare with OS upgrades in the past. Thanks!

When I check for Updates under iTunes...it is showing the iTunes upgrade is within the new OS Sierra. In order to get this update to my iTunes, it wants me to upgrade to Sierra. This is what I don't want to do. How can I update just iTunes but NOT upgrade my OS?

I'm having this situation too! iTunes required me to update when I plug my iPhone 7 to mac, in other hand I won't update my El Capitan because it will affect lot of my applications. *sigh*
iTunes requires v10.9 Mavericks or later so you should be able to update iTunes on El Capitan v10.11.
Launch iTunes then go to the iTunes menu bar and click iTunes > Check for Updates
FWIW, the current version of iTunes is 12.5.5 which runs on both El Capitan and Sierra. As Carolyn, said, if you don't have that version already you can update it through the App Store.
Open the App Store, click on the updates Tab. If you don't have 12.5.5 already the version should be listed there for you.
