My MacBook Pro is not recognizing my external webcam

I have an external webcam that I use regularly to film videos on my laptop. I have never had a problem with it before. Usually once I plug it into the USB, PhotoBooth automatically defaults to the external camera once opened.

Today I plugged the external webcam in as usual and instead of recognizing it, it is now a black screen saying "There is no connected camera." and will not even allow me to use my built-in FaceTime webcam. Two changes have been made to my computer since I last used the external cameral and that is my fiancee added 8 gb of RAM to my computer and I upgraded to Sierra. How do I either get my MacBook to recognize my external camera, or allow me the use of my built in webcam?

Peripheral devices are devices you attach to the edges (the periphery) of your computer, such as external drives, external webcams, or wired keyboards.

The System Management Controller, or SMC, is a micro controller responsible for many low-level tasks such as battery and temperature management, fan speed control, backlighting, and keyboard input. This is the procedure you use to reset it:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Unplug the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter from your computer.
  3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.
  4. Release all keys.
  5. Reconnect the power adapter.
  6. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
