Website navigation buttons don't work in Safari

I use a 2008 version iMac with the latest version of El Capitan installed. A few days ago, I started having problems with navigating websites such that various buttons and tabs on various websites won't work. I have done all of the standard steps I can think of such as shutting down the browser, clearing the cache and history, shutting down the iMac, making sure Javascript is enabled, making sure all software and applications are up-to-date....all to no avail.

Safari - Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing

Web Content not responding

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Hi,

Uninstall the Avast software as well as CleanMyMac.

https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB67

Third party anti virus software is not necessary on a Mac. Your Mac has System Integrity Protection.

Uninstall CleanMyMac > http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac2/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac- 2

Third party Mac cleaning utilities are not necessary on a Mac either. Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you.

Then restart your Mac then try Safari.

If you still have problems, you may have a third party Safari extension or third party plugin installed that's causing a conflict.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Uninstall one extension then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

You are welcome. You posted that the Oracle website couldn't verify that Java was installed. Try uninstalling/reinstalling.

Java 8 install/un-install

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Thanks for the help. So far I have removed my Avast antivirus software using the uninstall feature of the software. I have deleted as many old files associated with CleanMyMac as I could find using the FAF suggestion. I have checked my extensions and I have none. I have disabled plug-ins and that served to make certain websites function differently than (i.e. some website features were missing) when plug-ins are enabled. I have 11 plug-ins associated with Adobe Flash, Reader, Google Earth, iPhoto Photocast, DivX Web Player, Microsoft Office Live, Musicnotes, Sibelius Scorch, Silverlight, Test-Gen, and WebX 64. I now find when I try to print from the web, the page comes up blank and there is nothing to print. New issue or related? So far, no change in website functionality. Thanks.
