'recentsd' process memory leak and cpu hog

Hello everyone.

This is my first post here, as I’m hoping to find some help, before resorting to paying for an isolated incident to get support from Apple.

I have had this issue for a couple of weeks where my MacBook Pro (retina 13” 2014 - macOS Sierra 10.12.3) starts to warm up and spin its fans and when I check the activity monitor I see it’s because I have this hellish ‘recentsd’ process hogging on memory and sometimes also on CPU.

It halves my battery life or worse. And it slows down my computer.

If I kill, it comes back right away. If I restart my MBP, it goes away for a while, but eventually comes back.

I have searched around for it, of course, and it found hints that it can be related to Mail.app but I don’t even use Mail.app anymore, and haven’t done it in a long time.

Attached you’ll find a couple of screenshots from the issue.

Thank you for any help you can provide me.

Start your MPB in "Safe Mode" (Hold the Shift key when booting). It will start much slower than normal, login, then restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup. This clears some system caches.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

You can also run EtreCheck to see if it detect any problems: http://etresoft.com

Thank you. I did both, at first after booting into safe mode and then normally, the problem stayed away for a while. But it returned.

Etrecheck didn’t return me any specific error, but confirmed me that the process is a complete hog.
