Saving edits from External Editors for Photos back to Photos for Mac not working

I seem to be spinning my wheels with this. Purchased and installed Externals Editors for Photos on MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.1.3. Using Photoshop Elements 12 as external editor. No problem with using Extensions in edit window of Photos to open Photoshop Elements as editor, but I cannot figure out how to save the edited version in Photos. I watched the video by the developer of the app and and another on that I found on MacMost.s it looked seamless - Save/Close/Save Changes. This did not work for me. The edited images are instead sent to a folder and the image in Photos remains the same. I thought that this app would save the editied version over the original in Photos. Do I need to somehow change my settings in PSE? Does this app not work to save directly for PSE to Photos? Do I need to save the edited image to my desktop and import it to Photos? If so, I didn't need the Extension because I could already do that. My experience is not lining up with comments posted by users. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has knowledge about this process.

Thanks,

Carole

There is a filename extension problem with PSE12 as an external editor with Photos.

When I am using PSE 12 from the Photos.app with the External Editors extension, and save the edited photo in Photos, Photoshop Elements will save it with the wrong Filename extension.

edit: The External Editors extension is passing an image file with the extension ".jpeg" to PSE, but PSE is saving the edited photo with the extension ".jpg" and does not replace the original file. This way Photos will not see the edits, after you finish.

When you save the edits, ensure that the filename extension will be ".jpeg".

Here's another take on using PSE from within Photos:

Here's what you need to know about editing with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or any 3rd party editor from within Photos:

Note: when I refer to the Photoshop file extension, .psd, it can be the file extension that your particular editor of choice uses.

1 - if you create a .psd file from a jpeg original you must save it to the desktop and import as a new file just like with iPhoto.

2 - if a jpeg is edited by PS resulting in a .psd file and it's saved without selecting the Desktop the default location will be here in a folder like this

User uploaded file

AND the resulting folder and .psd file will be deleted automatically.

3 - if you flatten the file in PS and save it as a jpeg it will be saved correctly and recognized by Photos.

4 - if the original file is a .psd file and is edited by PS and just saved the resulting edited version will be converted to a jpeg file and recognized by Photos. Also if edited with PS a second time you'll lose the layers and just be editing a jpeg file.

5 - to keep the .psd file so you can do another edit first duplicate it and edit the duplicate file with PS. That will preserve the original .psd file and it's layers for additional edits even though the first edit will be lost to the second edit.

As long as the filename extension you use for "Save" in PSE is the same as the one External Editors created, the External Editors extension will save the file back to Photos.

After editing the photo in PSE, I click "File > Save".

The Save dialog will show the location and name of the file originally passed to Photoshop Elements.

I just have to check the filename field to make sure to pick exactly the same name and extension as the original.

Now should PSE give a warning, that the file exist and ask, if I want to replace it.

I click "Replace", and the External Editor extension will show the modified photo and ask to save the changes. Then the modified photo will appear in Photos.

As long as we are editing JPEGs, It is not necessary to save the edited version to the Desktop and to reimport.

The original in Photos will be save. The External Editor extension is passing a copy of the current version to Photoshop Elements. If you look at the path in the "Save" dialog in PSE, you'll see, that PSE will be using the copies stored in the user library at ~/Library/Containers/me.bruns.ExternalEditorsForPhotos.PhotoExtension/Data/Docu ments/0F3B201A-3359-4FB4-95BD-7FD1F495EC44/some.jpeg

This is the sandbox, where editing extensions are exchanging the photos with photos. The original master image file in Photos will remain untouched.

Thank you for the explanation. I looked at the the file extensions in the folder and sure enough, there was the discrepancy! It was so frustrating to carefully follow the steps and not have the expected results. So it seems that the program will not work for me unless I do a workaround.

I was actually considering upgrading from PSE 12 to PSE15. Do you know if the same problem exists with PSE 15, or has it been corrected the the new version?

I did see the above-noted when I was searching for answers to the problem. Having to save the file to the desktop and import it to Photos seemed was the method I used without the External Editors for Photos app. From the description of the functionality of the app and the video tutorials I viewed, it appeared that the edited image could be saved directly back to the Photos file, retaining the non-destructive feature:

I just did an edit using External Editors for Photos with PSE 12. All of the images in Photos for Mac have extension .JPG (not .jpeg as in iPhoto - don't know why). Opened image →Extensions→External Editors →opens in default selected Photoshop Elements 12→edited→File→Save→ chose .jpeg in dropdown window→message. "Image already exists. Do you want to replace it?"→ answered Yes→closed window for PSE→Save Changes. The edited image with the changes was in Photos and the file extension was .JPG. I tested it with Revert to Original which worked. I will try a few more times to make sure, but it seems Léonie was right about making sure that the image file extension for the edited image is changed to .jpeg when saving in PSE. Alternately, If'm not sure that I have finalized the edit, I will save it to the desktop as .psd for additional work.

Thank you, Léonie!
