Can't find iPod Nano Driver - get Windows Found New Hardware

Hi from Oz. Yet another struggling new iPod user.

I have downloaded the new iTunes 7.02 software, the iPod nano 4GB is connected and charging OK, BUT Windows says New Hardware Detected, and wants a driver location. It tells me to insert the CD which came with the product, but no CD was supplied. I expected that the installation of iTunes would have installed the driver, but apparently not. (If it is somewhere, I can't find it) I have searched through the manuals and the threads and even Google for mention of this issue, can't see it anywhere.

I must be unique, but please point me in the right direction if you can. My son and daughter will be ever so grateful!

When looking on Driverguide, search at the top of the screen (not the simple / advanced etc) for usbstor.

The usbstor.inf file I found does not have Apple listed... so while things work, they are still messy.

In searching the web for a more complete solution, I found a similar issue on a computer with an ASUS motherboard. (Mine is ASUS also) If all you guys are on Asus then maybe we have a common cause.

I tried this and it worked for me.

It was a long hard road and took me three days
to figure out. I don't know if all the steps
are necessary but this is what I did.

Uninstalled itunes and quicktime but left
the file apple software update in programes

Restarted computer.
Went throught Start to Programmes and opened
Apple software update and used it to download
itunes and Quicktime. (for some reason the file
was larger than before).
Restarted windows

Opened up Itunes

Connected Ipod to usb port.

Go into start right click on My Computer and
select manage.

Go into Device Manager The Ipod will show up
under with a question mark
When you go into the ipod there is no
driver installed
Click install Driver (since no disk came with ipod)
check the box to look in a specific place
put in C:\i386

when the usb driver is found it will look for you
to install the windows xp disk for the file
usbstor
Since I cannot find the disk I directed it
to C:\i386 (I had already checked that usbstor was
in i386 since the computer was first loaded)
If C:i386\i386 comes up, just deleted
the last few digits.

When installed I got a warning that the driver was not
recognised I ignored same.

The above resulted in the setting up of a USB Mass Storage Device which could be seen under Device Manager Universal
Seral Bus Controlers.

After than I got a Hardware Installation Wizard looking
for my to install the Ipod Driver Update.

Did the same as I had done for previous pointed
everything to C:\i386. Had a message warning me that I
was about to overwrite a more recent file, chose not
to overwrite.

Checked into Itunes diagnosis for ipod everything ok.

Hope this works for anyone out there

Mitch/gonemad - thanks for this great advice. Managed to get my daughter's new nano working in 10 minutes by following your advice, after having spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone to Apple, who failed to help, and told me that my PC was obviously unique as they'd never heard of this. Wish I'd checked this forum first and saved the phone bill!!!

Hi there

This advice helped my computer recognise my nano 2g as a USB storage device, but now am repeatedly asked to install Apple ipod driver despite trying the last few steps of your advice... any suggestions guys?

At least I can now put music on the machine which is a major relief...

Best wishes for new year!

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
-- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
-- Safely eject the iPod
-- Reboot the PC

If does not help,
Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
