My MacBook Air (early 2014) running macOS Sierra 10.12.3 does not have a disable remote control infrared received option in System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General > Advanced.
So is there another way to pair a remote. Yes, I have tried holding down FF and Menu on the remote near the front of the screen for 5 seconds and quite a bit longer and nothing happens.

You may be right, but whether infrared or bluetooth, there must be some way to run iTunes or DVD player or Keynotes from a distance without having to be right at the keyboard.
That model of MacBook Air does not have InfraRed capability.

Um... no... You don't seem to understand. You can not use a remote with a MacBook Air... there is no receiver built in. What is it you hope to control with a remote?
You're welcome. Yes, any remote would need to be compatible with the mac, and use a technology such as WiFi or BlueTooth.
