Can't add google account in Sierra

I am having trouble adding a google account in my freshly installed Sierra.

I just had to format and install OS again in my MacBook Air today, and it worked well until I tried to add my Google account in Preferences. I type my e-mail and password and get a blank screen, with only a "cancel" option. It just gets blank for no reason and I get stuck since I only can cancel and the account is not added.

Tried searching Apple communities but the similar issues were old and the solutions weren't useful since there is nothing about google or gmail in my keychains so there is nothing to delete or change.

Any help, please?

same issue with my wife's gmail account, started yesterday. deleted both gmail and yahoo accounts, then tried to add them both back. yahoo synced up with no problem.

checked for updates

switched the "allow less secure app" option on by signing into the gmail account using safari, and checking all the security settings.

i've gotten a prompt that said allow this device to access google account, but still just the blank gray screen after the password was put in.

the gmail account is working fine on the iPhone and iPad, just the desktop mac running 10.12.3

and help?

I contacted Google and they emailed me saying:

Hello,

Thanks for your patience.

After reviewing the information you provided, we believe that you may be

affected by a known issue. Here are some details about the issue:

Description:

When adding a Google account to a macOS device, after authenticating a grey

blank screen is disabled and the account is not added.

Our engineering team is investigating with a high priority.

How to diagnose:

You are seeing a blank, grey screen when attempting to add a Google account

on a macOS device.

The account is being added from macOS Preferences > Internet accounts, the

Calendar app, or the Mail app, and after selecting the Google account

option and entering a valid G Suite username and password, a grey screen is

encountered.

Workaround:

It is possible to enable Gmail sync with the macOS Mail app, without using

the 'Google' account option when adding an account.

1. Enable access to less secure apps for the G Suite account being added.

See the section 'Enabling less secure apps to access accounts' for

instructions on how to achieve this at

https://support.google.com/a/answer/6260879.

2. 'Add Other Account...' and select Mail account

3. Enter the G Suite email address and password

4. In the next page enter the details:

Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com

5. Select 'Sign In' and then 'Done'.

Alternatively, accessing the G Suite account using a web browser also

allows the viewing Mail, Contacts, and Calendar on macOS devices.

Are you using a VPN by any chance if so can you disconnect it and try adding the account again if not are you able to connect to a different internet connection and try to add the account while on that connection if not if might be worth booting to safemode (safeboot) to make sure no other 3rd party processes are running that are preventing the account setup instructions for that here Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support if the issue still persists try changing your DNS to the google DNS then add the account again google DNS steps here https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using if that fails try adding the account in a new user on the mac and post back here the result and we will go from there new user instructions here OS X Yosemite: Set up users on your Mac its says its for yosemite but the process has been the same since 10.7.

I'm having the same issue too! I'm hoping it's just a Google server issue or something because I picked the wrong day to update my password. When prompted on my Mac, I get that grey box as well. I even tried booting into Safe Mode and does nothing. And it's not only my Mac that's having the issue. On my iPhone, when I click "Re-enter password" since I changed it, it does nothing. Doesn't connect, it just brings me back to the page where I was left-off to re-enter password. I tried deleting the accounts on both devices and now I can't add them at all.

So, that's why I think it's a server issue because I can't even set it up on my iPhone and 2, yes 2 of my Macs. I even went as far as restoring from backup because I was so frustrated, but it was too late to go back because it had already started and I did it for nothing. 😠

Me too. Removed my account since it had stopped syncing the calendar with my other devices. Then I couldn't add it anymore. Starts of fine, login in and two-step seems to work but then it stops at a grey box with only the "cancel" option available.

Have tried to clean out keychain and old certificates etc. as is stated in older posts but sadly with no luck.

I have also tried to add one of my kids account that hasn't have two-step verification and it doesn't work either …

My case here as well. It started yesterday. Any attempt to login to gmail produces grey screen.

I attempted to register for 2-step verification as well, and that just adds one more step (sms code) screen before it gets grey.

I removed my account and tried to re-register it, but the same problem occurs - after inserting the password or the sms code the screen greys out and I can only cancel it.

I also changed my password and it did not help

Funny enough I decided to try to install Thundebird for Mac and it worked fine and registered my account without a hitch.

Evidently it looks like the Mac Mail program specific problem...

It apparently fixed itself, I don't know what happened. I was having keychain problems so I contacted AppleCare to solve this issue (Mac kept asking me for keychain pass, it was impossible to use) and after cleaning keychain I managed to add Google account. I have no idea if it's related, so I can't tell what really happened.

Feb 15, 2017 1:15 AM in response to tmareto

I'm having this issue too! Was fine. Then I added my google account to my new iPhone and I forgot the password so I changed it. When the Mac prompted me for the new password it got stuck on the grey screen.

Deleted my google account on the Mac and to my horror, couldn't add it back. I can add it as an IMAP, however, it does not give me the calendar function so it does not solve the problem.

Tried clearing Keychain Access through the app and through Finder. Didn't work. 😟

Working fine on my iPhone but now I can't work seamlessly across my Mac and phone.

Feb 15, 2017 8:14 AM in response to tmareto

I have the same issue. I can't add the Google account in Internet Accounts nor can I add it in email. In Mac Mail, I can enter the email address and password, but it hangs on the gray screen with only Cancel as an option. In Internet Accounts, I'm not even able to add the account. The + - signs are grayed out. This just started happening this week.
