Can't add google account in Sierra

I am having trouble adding a google account in my freshly installed Sierra.

I just had to format and install OS again in my MacBook Air today, and it worked well until I tried to add my Google account in Preferences. I type my e-mail and password and get a blank screen, with only a "cancel" option. It just gets blank for no reason and I get stuck since I only can cancel and the account is not added.

Tried searching Apple communities but the similar issues were old and the solutions weren't useful since there is nothing about google or gmail in my keychains so there is nothing to delete or change.

Any help, please?

Ok guys so I tested from 10.9.5 to 10.12.2 10.9.5 was fine 10.10 gave me a code to enter into my application but didn't say what application to enter it into 10.11.6 done the same as 10.12.3 as did 10.12.2 it seems to be an issue that affects the latest versions of MacOS/OS X and from reading above new versions of iOS seem to be affected as well it could be a google issue but it wouldn't hurt to span apple.com/feedback with request to have the issue looked into and/or call Apple ad report the issue so it can be escalated to their engineering team for investigation as well.

Just want to add that I am experiencing the same issue. Did a clean install of Sierra this morning (for an unrelated reason), and now I can't add my Google Account to OS X. Everything was working fine before I formatted and reinstalled, but now the account add screen just hangs after entering my username and password.

It's also worth noting that both my iPhone and iPad are experiencing the same issue (can get through entering username and password but then the account doesn't actually get added, even though I do receive a notification email from Google saying that the devices were used to sign into my Google account). Makes it definitely seem like a communication issue between Mail and Google rather than an OS/hardware issue.

I have the same issue. I tested on 10.12.3 with existing Mac user and created new Mac User and get the same results when trying to add Gmail account to Mail. It is interesting though that on the existing Mac User the previously added Gmail account is working fine (can send and receive email).

I also tested adding a gmail account on my iPad Pro IOS 10.2.1 and it also doesn't add the account.

The iPad issue I had it too but I was able to fix it by Revoke app key through Google website. I then created a new Mail key and that did the trick.

As for Mac, adding the account is still a challenge. I deleted the account, I formatted and re did the installation. I tried turning off the Firewall but nothing worked.

Same here ... I removed all other google accounts, cleaned out Key Chain, Rebooted, turned around twice, rubbed my belly ... nothing. Blank Screen.

Interesting ... I didn't have two-step authentication turned on and I went right to the blank screen. I turned it on and it asked for the code ... before going to the blank screen. Something is broken ...

Tmareto, Were you able to resolve this issue? I have seen post, to this discussion of people stating that they were able to log in. I am trying to sign into my college google account. It was working fine up until I had to change the password. I can sign into my google account on my mobile devices, just not my MacBook. Please let me know what you have found out. Thank you.

I had the exact same problem -- the blank grey screen when trying to connect to my Gmail account from my Mac (macOS Sierra 10.12.4) via a Google mail account on my Mac. I ended up solving the problem by creating a new generic (as opposed to Google) mail account to use for Gmail. There are a couple of ways to do this, either in Mail app or System Preferences, and the end result is the same.

I created a new mail account in Mail app, by going to the Mail menu, and choosing Add Account... Then a dialog popped up asking me to Choose a Mail account provider... and I chose Other Mail account... clicked Continue, and provided my Gmail email address and password. Since I have 2-step verification turned on for my Google account, the password I used here is an app password specifically created for Mail on my Mac (at https://myaccount.google.com/security#signin).

This solution has been working without a glitch.

i had a really bad problem with that and finally called apple, it took the poor guy like 30 minutes of blind talk-through without remote management on both iphone and imac, but finally he/we got it done

google changes things so that your iCloud stops working or works intermittently (and who knows, may be sniffing your apple id keys). they sell android which are set against iphone sales capice?

please use some other choice. your internet provide likely gave you a free email use that. or use apple's icloud email as your choice for iCloud.

YOUR ANSWER: don't try to get it to work !!

MY ANSWER: apple tech was knowlegable. we visited each and every app that uses iCloud and signed me out (that took like 20 min, several apps on each device were signed in!!). having only had the imac days i'd never have figured that out 🙂

after that: i went to apple's icloud website, logged in, and was able to manage all my changes (my new email and etc) without a problems or error messages saying i was not allowed to make chages.

good luck

Realise the original post is old but hope this helps others who may be searching more recently.

I finally managed to get my Google account working again after rebooting my Mac.

I'd tried every piece of advice I'd found on this forum & others (including removing Keychain entries) but all to no avail until I decided to quit all the relevant apps, log out of my Mac, restart & log back in.

Was then able to add Gmail, contacts & Google calendar back in one at a time through the generic "add account" for each app as a Google account, no need to add as "other account".

Can't believe it was that simple but as I rarely log out of my Mac I didn't think of the "turning it off then on again" solution...

Have you tried re-booting as I did in my post above? (Nov 22, 2017).

I quit all relevant the apps affected e.g. mail, calendar , contacts - then logged out of my mac, restarted & logged back in. I was then able to add my Google account & associated apps back in as ‘Google account’ not ‘Other account’.

If this works for you remember to set your preferences for the calendar refresh rate - mine was set to 15 mins but if you want to see almost immediate changes set it to the most frequent e.g. 1 minute
