unlock iphone 5c

My friend gave me his iPhone 5c and said If i could unlock it I could keep it, he lost it downtown for a while and locked with with "find my iPhone" and someone called and returned it but now it says "this iPhone is linked to an Apple ID. Enter the Apple ID password that was used to set up this phone" and then "message from owner: this iPhone has been stolen and is being tracked call xxxxxxxxxx" but he doesn't remember the email OR the password he used and it's probably one of his old emails which he no longer has access to, is there any possible way to still unlock it?
