Correct icon not showing in the dock

I installed the 'Notability' application on my macbook pro 2016 with touchbar, running on Sierra 10.12.3.

In finder, the correct icon is showing:

User uploaded file

In launchpad, also the correct icon is showing:

User uploaded file

However, when I launch the application, which works perfectly, the following icon is shown in the dock:

User uploaded file

How to fix this in order for the correct icon also to show in the dock?

Thanks for your help!

I found a way to fix this problem. These commands still caused the dock to "sprout" a second icon for Elements when I launched it, but that icon was now correct.

I then took the first Elements icon and moved it off the dock to delete it, and then used the right mouse button to select options on the second (correct) icon and selected "Keep in Dock". I think this extra little dance was required with Elements on El Capitan too. Maybe an Adobe application problem?

These commands need to be executed in Terminal using an administrator account. Thanks to a post on http://apple.stackexchange.com.

sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -exec rm {} \;
sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.iconservices -exec rm -rf {} \;
sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store

Hello timhag,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, when this app isn’t open the icon is correct in the Dock, but once the app is launched the icon in the Dock isn’t showing correctly. First, try reinstalling the app again. If reinstalling the app doesn’t help, you can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

As per this article : How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory) is a small amount of memory that your Mac uses to store certain settings and access them quickly. Settings that can be stored in NVRAM include sound volume, display resolution, startup-disk selection, time zone, and recent kernel panic information. The settings stored in NVRAM depend on your Mac and the devices you're using with your Mac.

Try to run NVRAM and see if it works .

This is what worked for me.

  • Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
  • Type or copy paste the following:
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finder
  • Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
  • Restart your Mac.

At first I though it failed because the icons were still generic but after re-launching the apps with generic icons the correct image was restored.

Hi Sarah, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately your assumption is not correct: I do not have the app fixed to the dock and if I do fix it to the dock, the icon changes to the more generic one. So when I open the app from finder or launchpad (which are my only 2 options as I have not fixed it to the dock), the generic icon is shown in the dock instead of the correct app icon. All other apps simply show their proper icon. Re-installing did not fix the issue. The app works fine though. On my previous macbook pro (late 2013) this was not an issue.

Hi Sarah and Macjack, sorry for not getting back sooner. I created another user account as you suggested and indeed the icon now shows correctly in that user account. Thanks you. But now of course the question how to correct this in my normal user account, how to figure out what is causing this. Do you have any suggestions? Appreciate your input.

I too am seeing this problem.

I just upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra 10.12.3 and my Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 icon shows correctly as a permanent resident in the dock. But when I use it to launch Elements, I get a second icon in the dock that is generic.

This only happens on one of my accounts.

Any idea how to fix the affected account so that when launching Elements using the correct icon it does not cause a second generic icon to be created in the dock?

Thanks.

I experienced this or a similar problem. I cloned my OS X 10.11.6 boot disk, a 1 TB SSD, to an external disk, reformatted the SSD, installed macOS 10.12.5 Sierra on it and migrated applications and data of several accounts from the clone. Two applications, iMovie and iDVD, displayed only the generic application icon in the dock, where they are fixed, as well as in the App folder accessed from the dock and in the Launchpad. Nothing suggested in this thread remedied the problem. However, when I clicked the arrow in the App folder accessed from the dock to display it in Finder, the correct icons were displayed there and everywhere else except in the dock. So I deleted the icons in the dock and moved new ones in from the App folder.

I believe the problem afflicts apps that I seldom -- perhaps never -- used on this machine. I have another MacBook Pro, the last 17" Unibody that Apple made, and upgraded it from OS X 10.11.6 to macOS 10.12.5 the same way. On it, it was the icon for Microsoft Outlook that was not being displayed. When I launched it for the first time after installing Sierra the problem cleared up. I have never used Outlook on my Macs, but on that MacBook Pro I have used iMovie and iDVD.

Had the same issue (with me it was Acrobat). Called apple support and the connected remotely so they could see exactly what I was talking about.

Solved the issue by deleting ALL the content in the "caches" folder, inside of "Library". You may have to delete the contents a couple of times.

Then shut down completely and unplug power chord. Leave it unplugged for 20 seconds, then plug back in and restart the system... immediately hold the option+command+r+p keys for 20 seconds then let go. Apple image should show up and the system will restart. Launch the application in question and the right icon should show up in the dock.

Hope this helps everyone.

Cheers.
