Active Couch to 5k with watch problems

I am trying to use the Active Couch to 5k app with my apple watch. The watch consistently says "begin workout on iphone" when I try to use it. Even when I start the workout on my iphone it continues to say this. Any suggestions? Would ideally not need to take my phone on my run.
