Can the MAC address be used to distinguish an iPad or Iphone from a Macbook?

MacBook Pro, iOS 10.2.1

A MAC - Media Access Control - address is a unique address to each network device. An iPhone would actually have more than one MAC address because it has multiple network interfaces. (So might an iPad and MacBook.) If you use an external plug-in network adapter e.g. a USB to Ethernet adapter it is that adapter which has the MAC address so if you mix them up the address might end up on a different computer.

Since normally a MAC address is unique to a specific device if you have a list of which MAC address corresponds to which device you can use it to distinguish between them. However there is not a particular block of consecutive MAC addresses that are all iPhones, and another that are all iPads and so on. There are some lists which would say certain ranges are allocated to an Apple device but that is as precise as they go.

Note: We will ignore the possibility for hackers to 'spoof' i.e. fake MAC addresses.
