No Camera View Finder (Black Screen) iPhone 7

Howdy,

I periodically experience view finder failure within the camera app (iPhone 7 (MNAU2LL/A); version: 10.2.1 (14D27); Available 173.2GB).

When I open the camera, from the lock screen or the camera app, the view finder is black, like a finger is sitting on the lens (but it's not, I checked all 10 of mine). However, the camera functions, yellow boxes indicate focal points, HDR indicates lighting scenes, a click and hold will actuate AF-lock, camera switches between front and back, etc. The camera still functions. When I select the shutter button it takes a picture. However, there is no view finder.

I can usually correct the issue by restarting my phone, but as one may expect, avoiding the failure does not correct it. And, as is preferable and expected from the muy-expensivo pocket-computer, restarting the device is not the preferred protocol for photography.

While I've become adept at Jedi-photography, I'm concerned that if I hand the camera to someone else, their skills will not be honed enough to succeed & I'd like to save them the embarrassing revelation of their inadequacies.

Any suggestions as to why this may be occurring would be interesting.

A software update that would prevent this failure would be exciting.

Advice on avoidance is usually trite and unappreciated, but fire away anyway.

Thanks for your insight.

Hello,

You see a closed lens or black screen

If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
  2. Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
  3. Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
  4. If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping User uploaded file. If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.

Yes that's my name. And no I'm not a computer neither is anyone else on the forms.

I understand your issue. This is the first time I've ever heard of anything like this and probably others. I replied with the steps from the Apple article.

I will suggest three things:

  1. You can Contacting Apple Support for troubleshooting steps.
  2. Make a Genius Bar Appointment as they have diagnostic tools.
  3. Take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.

We are users just like you. We are not from Apple and we do not know the other troubleshooting steps they have.

Thanks Gus, if that is your Real name, for the rapid response. (also, are you a computer? I would guess yes.)

Recall:

...like a finger is sitting on the lens (but it's not, I checked all 10 of mine)

Clearly...

I can... correct the issue...,but... as is preferable..., restarting the device is not the preferred protocol for photography.

With humble deference to the wisdom of the internet,
