I suggest using a symbol, for example, to type 4 squared, instead of trying to type 4², simply type 4^2.
If you have an external iPad keyboard, this may be of use.

Thank you sberman. On my iPad. I'm pretty sure it was you who answered the question that got me curious if it's do-able so I'll be glad to share.
1 Copy the 4² from here or my post above.
2 Go to settings> general> keyboard> text replacement> tap the + sign. Paste the 4² in top row. Remove the 4. I used sq as my shortcut. Tap save.
When printing a space must be left between the number and the squared or the iPad won't read it as a shortcut.

Long ago I saw a similar question and made a keyboard short cut. Let's see if it posts.
4²
I can see it, let's see if it posts in the ASC.
Edit. That doesn't look half bad if I do say so myself. 🙂
Bob, that looks good! Did you type it on an iPad? How did you manage to do it?
Very nicely done. Thanks, Bob! I'm sure the original poster will appreciate your explanation as well.
You're welcome. Glad to help. 🙂
