When i am doing yoga in a class or on my own, watch doesn't track my activity and calories burnt accurately. why is that?

hi,

i am using series 2 watch that has watchOS 3.1.3 (its up to date)

So my question is that does apple watch only tracks your real exercise movement / activity only if you are using an app (either activity tracker or app of any sort)?

When i am doing yoga in a class or on my own, watch doesn't track my activity and calories burnt accurately.... actually it doesn't track at all i feel... it shows my movement just like it does throw out the day with negligible calories used up. Whereas, when i use an app say "yoga studio" and select a class from this app, then it shows me like 170 calories burnt and of course picks up the duration of workout. that makes me think that the calories count 170 is not even legit, it is what the yoga app is telling and not based on what i am truly burning. WHY is that?

I hope i am making sense. Any response to my question is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

To record workouts on your Apple Watch and receive the most accurate credits towards your Exercise (minutes) and Move (calories) goals, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party fitness app) and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout.

This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when estimating results, including using tailored calorie calculations for some activities.

To record yoga workouts - which are neither included within the main list nor sufficiently similar - record your workouts under "Other".

This credits one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout and Active calories at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data from the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher.

To label the workout as yoga: when ending the "Other" workout, tap the option for "Name Workout" and select yoga from the list of activity types.

The workouts that you do most often will be added as Quick Start options in the Workout app, including their labels.

Once it has been set up, the Activity app on Apple Watch tracks your activity at all times, both during general daily wear and when recording workouts.

However, it does not automatically recognise workout activities - or adjust estimations as appropriate - unless you specifically record them as workouts.

Recording a workout also enables your heart rate to be measured continuously throughout the session, with readings taken into account when estimating results.

During general daily wear, Apple Watch relies on your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results - which is why taking a yoga class may not result in many calories being recorded, unless it is recorded properly as a workout.
