Pandora starts randomly playing on phone

A fairly bizarre issue, but PandoraOne starts to play randomly on my iPhone 7 plus (plenty of space) without being user initiated (I can be in the other room or in an important meeting with my phone in my bag). I contacted Pandora without any resolution, so I am checking on here to see if anyone has experienced the same thing.

I am all up to date with iOS 10.2.1 and the latest Pandora iOS update, and the issue seems to persist, even after today's Pandora update. I am not sure if it matters, but I do have the Apple Watch on when it occurs and I have yet to duplicate the issue with it off.. Weird.. Currently, I've removed the Pandora Apple from my watch dock just incase, but it has yet to happen again.

The strangest thing about it is that even after I force quit Pandora on the phone, it still comes back and plays music after a few minutes. I tried a powering the phone off and on, and a hard reset, yet it continues to play music at random times. It has yet to do it at night when the watch is not on my wrist, so I am thinking that the watch is somehow the culprit.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Late to the discussion but had my first experience with this issue yesterday. Thought I must have triggered it somehow, then it happened again today on it's own without a doubt (while I was on a conference call for work, unfortunately).

No apple watch in my scenario. Haven't seen it happen with any of my iPhones. Culprit was an iPad running 9.3.5 with Pandora 1708.2

I've seen some of the issues mentioned in previous comments - pandora playing on an iphone or ipad without the app running....and for years I had the issue of pandora starting anytime I ENDED a phone call.

I know I need some updates but iPad is controlled by company policy so I have to wait. Any solutions found by previous commenters?

Same exact issue with the iPhone 8+

The app is not even running in the background and it will start playing and the only way to stop it is to open the app, wait for it to load, then close it again or turn your phone off.

This is a HORRIBLE problem as this has taken place in multiple meeting settings where it’s stricly not accepted. I can’t even take my phone into meetings now...

Same problem - iOS 10.2.1 and latest Pandora iOS app update. No Apple Watch in my scenario.

Pandora today has launched twice without prompting, and on both occasions the app was not even running at the time. Had to launch the app to be able to end the music.

Seems in my situation there might be a link between when I move from cellular to wifi - it seems to start on its own when I join a strong wifi signal.

Anyone else noticing that same scenario?

Same issue here... Pandora will start playing on random occasions throughout the day (it shows up on my lock screen with a single press of the home button). Typically, the app will be playing without showing up in the list of background apps at all. I have to physically start the app to then pause it.

What I have:

  • iPhone 6
  • iOS 10.2.1, Firmware 5.32.00
  • Carrier: Verizon 27.1
  • Pebble Time with Firmware v4.3
  • Pandora One v8.3

What I've tried:

  • iPhone power down, power-up
  • iPhone reset
  • Turned BlueTooth on/off
  • Went through all notification settings and turned most off (made sure none caused music to start)
  • Deleted Pandora app from iPhone and reinstalled (x2)
  • Deleted Apple Watch app and made sure all related services are turned off
  • The "auto-launch watch app" is (and has been) turned off
  • I do NOT have the Pandora app installed on my Pebble
  • The auto-play issue has happened with my Pebble Time less than a foot away from my iPhone on the same desk

I'm at a loss. But when Pandora starts playing during a large company meeting, that $4.99 I pay each month for service certainly seems like money I could be spending elsewhere.

Just to confirm what many have said, here's what I've experienced and what appears to be the case based on recent replies to this thread. The Pandora auto-play syndrome:

  • Is not wi-fi or cell signal dependent.
  • Does not appear to be tied to BluTooth range.
  • Happens with any version of iOS 10 (including 10.3).
  • Happens for both Watch and Pebble owners (anyone experience it without a smart watch?).
  • Is not permanently fixed by deleting and re-installing the app.
  • Is not permanently fixed by deleting apps from smart watches.
  • Is starting to cause Pandora to lose subscribers.

(I added that last one just to nudge Pandora to get on this thing!)

I had this happen twice last night, both times unprompted and once in a quiet room. My device is an iPhone 7, 128gb, and I had recently downloaded the latest Pandora release but hadn't used it in a while. Pandora shows as the last music app in the widget, the two songs that played were frequent listens on the app and not on my phone or my Apple Music account nor activated by Siri.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I have the iPhone 7 plus, iOS up to date (10.2.1). I do have the Apple Watch, but I have experienced this issue with my watch off as well so I don't think it's linked to that.

When my Pandora randomly starts playing, I can't just close out of it to get it to stop (there is no window to close). My phone doesn't respond on the lock screen when I try to pause the music after it randomly comes on. I uninstalled the Pandora app and have reinstalled it and unfortunately I am still having issues.

Ok I wanted to give an update.. I've seen a lot of people say they have uninstalled Pandora on their phone and still had it happen when they reinstalled. I went into the My Watch app on my phone and turned off the "Show app on Apple Watch" setting for Pandora and have not had the issue since. It's maybe been 4 days. I don't think it helps much to have access to the app on the watch anyways as it plays on the phone and you should ideally be in the same room as your phone if you want to queue up music anyways..

Hope this helps.
