SystemUIServer process not responding

Since a few weeks I have noticed that occasionally all system icons in the top right corner of the screen (like clock, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery etc.) except Spotlight are not responding. Hovering the mouse icon over them results in the beachball. After some digging using Activity Monitor I found out that the SystemUIServer process is also not responding (marked red). After restarting the process, everything turns back to normal. However after a few hours, the process locks up again.

Does anyone have any good ideas on why this is happening, or maybe a quick fix for detecting a locked up process and restarting it? Thanks!

Use system preferences to display the seconds on the menu clock. Make a note of the time the SystemUIServer process stops responding. Have a look in Console.app (System Messages) around that time and see if there are any clues.

The normal reason for such behaviour is a third-party extension or app that is not compatible with Sierra. Post an EtreCheck report:

You can also try restarting in Safe Mode:

to narrow down the possibilities.

Your machine (2016) is probably still under warranty so you can click the 'Contact Support' link on the top right of this page to get advice straight from the horse's mouth.
