Family Sharing
i have my son on family sharing when he went to app store to purchase an app it asked for credit card info. Should the itunes/app store be set to my apple id? I would think that defeats the purpose.

It should just let him charge it to your credit card as part of Family Sharing. Check your payment information from your account. Somebody asked a similar question recently and after re-entering their security code for the card the problem cleared.
